OT: Venom Nation 2.0??

Postby venomnation » Sun Feb 03, 2008 2:10 pm

Okay I need input.
From 1995 to August of 2001, I was on commercial radio. FM. I did rock radio…I did country radio…I even did a two-week fill in playing celine dion on the A/C station. THAT broke my balls, but I did it. It never felt better to get back to the other studio across the hall and play Blue Oyster Cult than after the last day of playing Michael Bolton

I’m at a crossroads here. For going on five years here on the internet….I’ve hosted a radio show of some sorts. A Podcast, if you will. I’ve had domains dedicated to it…I’ve had forums built around it, I’ve even at one point had a dedicated phone line to call in requests. I’ve done it live streaming, I’ve recorded it and then streamed it, and then every one of them regardless has been made available for download in some form. At it’s highest point a little over a year and a half ago, I had two dedicated domains running concurrently for two shows that were hosted by myself and a good friend of mine, was getting over 1500 downloads a show (fifteen hundred independent IP’s, totaling over 2000 downloads of each show) , and on average, I received anywhere between 350 and 400 emails a show with feedback, requests, or otherwise. Things slacked off a little bit, slowed down, money got REAL tight, and About a year ago, I just decided to ‘stop’ doing them and take a break, make things fresh again if I ever went back to it. In august of last year I started doing a show called the “Venom Nation” , to respond to OTHER’S response to my views on politics and the nation at large. It started picking up again…started gaining anywhere from 600 to 700 hits a show, doing them twice a month (at the most). And I wasn’t spending any money on them….I was doing them from the house….with equipment I already had…and uploading for free via megaupload….I wasn’t really putting any music into it….Then, I started getting threatening emails and phone calls (I have no idea how people could get my cell phone number…when I didn’t give it out). I just said ‘Fuck it” and stopped doing it altogether in November. Pulled the name. Pulled the myspace. Retreated and said “this ain’t worth it”.
Now back in the last week of January, I was presented with a potential opportunity….a local station here, shall remain un-noted which one, was in serious discussions NOT to renew the “Dee Snider House Of Hair” syndication for their station – instead, possibly opting for a local host to do three hours one night a week with a similar format. 80’s metal, classic hair metal, classic rock (to an extent) – and that host was me…. And it was my opinion, as well as that of the station director, that nobody fit the bill better. I have the voice, I have the experience, both on-air and at the board, and I have more knowledge of music than anybody in the immediate area..that and I’m fairly well known from having worked with a few local bands and my previous experience on radio. And I had the title too…he felt, and I was somewhat inclined to agree, that the title “Venom Nation” fit very well with the show he wanted us to do….as opposed to just a political nature. And that was looking GOOOOOD until tonight, when I found out that they had, indeed, caved to the pressure and signed another term for “House of Hair” -
And maybe it’s for the better…cause I was limited in what I could do…..certain bands would never have been allowed in the playlist though they very much belong there.

Now I’m jonesin.. I want so bad to go back and do something. But I want to know something. Would any of you, as, more or less, the penultimate rock fans out there, have any interest in hearing me go back to my ‘true to form” self? I’d have the mainstream artists in it….but it’d vary up big time in what was played. Any one of many artists discussed here at this forum could, and likely would be included in the shows at some point. The show could swing back and forth between both ends of the spectrum, going from Survivor to Stevie Ray Vaughan in one show, and anywhere in between. And if I did, do you think with the “crackdowns” out there now, that there’d be any legal issues surrounding me doing the show. I believe firmly that songs like “Higher Place” from Journey’s “Arrival” album have as much a place in a ‘Rock Show” as Guns N Roses “Welcome To The Jungle”. I believe that artists like JSS and Talisman, Queen, Styx, and Toto have as much a right to be played loud and proud as bands like the five M’s of metal…(metallica, Motorhead, Maiden, Megadeth, and Motley Crue). I think ‘Rock” is “rock” and it doesn’t matter how you get it…. I’m as big a fan of the 80’s power ballads as I am the classic Nugent riffs….Bon Jovi doesn’t scare me….Aerosmith are some of my heroes, and I’m not ashamed to say I actually like some of Bryan Adams’ music. I think some of the greatest vocalists of our time are men Like Dennis DeYoung and Freddie Mercury, and women Like Ann Wilson and Patty Smyth.
And if I did, do you think with the “crackdowns” out there now, that there’d be any legal issues surrounding me doing the show?
Would you, as rock fans, have any problem downloading a two hour show and jamming out with me once or maybe twice a month? Giving feedback? Making Requests? Knowing that my library of songs is perhaps the one of the most vast out there….(I have over 3 TB of music that I’ve ripped from CD’s I’ve purchased over the last ‘’x’’ amount of years – years and I’ve got over 1000 CD’s and nearly 200 backup dvd’s at 4.7 gigs each....

Andrew, I’ve sent you a PM on this prior. Weigh in. What’s your thoughts on it. The idea. The ‘legality’. The thought of potentially putting this out there for (I don’t, as a matter of habit, ever TRY to portray artists I play in a negative light. If I don’t like them, I don’t bash them, I just don’t play them)
And the rest of you weigh in too. I want to know what your thoughts are. I’m kinda jonesin to do something again…and this place would be a great place to garner listenership….

Sound off.

I've always thought that if I had a radio station, it would play classic rock and those bands new stuff. There doesn't seem to be a radio station that does that. Bands like Journey can't get airplay on their new records and that's just crazy. They're classic rock bands doing what they do.

Good luck on your endeavor Steve.

A few do. Maybe it's payola, but Bruce and U2 do. It does suck, you are right Ricko Dicko. Are you going to pass out on LV and let me drape my crank in your face for pics?
