Hmmm, I don't know...we were trying to really figure it out and I think it might have been live.

The National Anthem certainly wasn't.

I thought Tom's voice was live, but I question the instrumentation and the backups. I remember the first time McCartney was on the SB (he did it twice)- the backing was pre-recorded and he sang to the recorded track, then there's was the Whitney deal. In that short of a timeslot, it's gotta be tough to get it all perfectly mixed, and that's how it sounds every year. I think that U2 was definitely live.

I just watched the u2 one again. Tell me this isn't one friggin' moving performance...

It gives me the chills.

Your buddy over at Sirius is talking about it. Fred is a pretty sharp guy, says Tom was good but not all live.

Wow, really? You could hear Petty talking between tunes and stuff. That's a letdown. Watch the U2 link. Not taped.

I distinctly heard, several times, that walk around "huh" thing going on with his voice during a couple of the songs. If it was pre-recorded, they must have had him set up as if on stage and walking around. Guess we'll never find out the real truth of things. lol

With that synth/keys intro and mid-song break that would've been perfect for the Supe.

Let's give Southern Accents some love. How about Rebels! Great friggin song. What about Don't Come Around Here No More. Or for that matter how about JAMMIN ME another forgotten classic.

If Petty's vocals were really pre-recorded then damn, couldn't they have done better with him? I thought his voice sounded pretty weak overall.

A little too slow for the SB half but cool tune.

PLUS ,, the last song.. he sang one verse and let campbell play a guitar solo..

PLUS.. any one notice that he played FREEFALLING wrong??? that cat capo'd on the first making it an E and let Campbell play it in D... sounded very cool.... he blew the STONES away.. and ive never said that before....

Most likely Petty was chosen because he has something coming up on Fox. The SB was to promote him for another Fox gig.

I agree!! But there's nothing in between that anyone knows about mate - that's the problem!!!

All the classic rockers that big networks might trust to put on a "hits" show are near dead and the young bands of today aren't talented enough to play and actualy have more then 2 songs anyone might actually know!

Why not put up a Nu-Prog band for one of these shows?

Have Muse get on there and bust out Knights of Cydonia, Time is Running Out, Hysteria.

Get Porcupine Tree, do Shallow, Blackest Eyes, Open Car.

Dream Theater could get on and smash out Another Day, As I Am, abbreviated Pull Me Under.

Exactly what I thought. 'Cept for Maroon 5, Gorillaz and The Killers. I can't think of modern bands with more than a couple songs.

Of those, the only one I'd wanna see is The Killers.

Its a testament to how good the classic rock music is. Grunge isn't resurging but AOR is constantly getting used in ads, TV spots.

The Killers - Somebody Told Me

The Killers - Mr. Brightside

The Killers - Smile Like You Mean It

I'm sorry, but *yawn*.

Are a lot of football fans also fans of Muse? Or Porcupine Tree? They've got to have somebody who the football audience can actually relate to. Hence, classic rock or pop.

Never mind they tried to be cool, hip, whatever with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake when the Super Bowl was here and they ended up with a boob broadcast and subsequently TiVO'ed all over the world. I think the NFL is gunshy. Or maybe it's boob shy.... 8)
