This is what happens when I got no gig or kid on a friday and my wife goes to bed. I'm left to play drums and catch up on this board, among other stuff.

Well that performance just floored me ! I think he is sounding more like himself that before BUT the emotional aspect of his singing is OVER THE FUCKING TOP. HIs high tenor is clear and sharp. Wait until we hear him properly recorded.. Fuck !!! IF they can write the right material for this guy I think they have a shot to regain massive public attention. Arnel in a short period has become a fucking monster. I hope the band treats him well and that they can get along. I would hate to see Arnel become the next vocal casualty in Journeys never ending quest to.... Destroy all tenors!

1st time logged on here for ages, I'll just use this thread to say that based on the YouTube vids, it certainly looks like Arnel has the voice to pull it off, new material will hopefully be interesting and that whenever the tour hits the UK, I'll be there, hopefully in Glasgow.

Arnel sounds good - he's got the pipes for sure, but he doesn't sound like Perry other than he's got Perry's range in his prime. To me, it sounds like Arnel singing Journey in his own voice and putting a bit of his own spin on it. This goes for all the Journey songs I've heard him do on Youtube. There's nothing wrong with that. As others have said, I really hope he doesn't go the way of the dodo, er, tenor singer in Journey by killing his voice. Sadly, I doubt they've learned their lesson.

And yes, his backup band on the Youtube clips could use some improvement.

The one major concern I would have is his stage presence. He doesn't have much charisma/presence on many of the Youtube clips. That will be the telling mark to me. If he can step it up, I think it'll work.

If he sounded like Perry, everybody would be on his case for being an imitator. The guy's got his own voice and that voice can sing the shit out of Journey tunes. I think he will do well. There's still the unknown of what Journey's touring will do to him. I would think that since he's paid his dues in clubs, that he'll be well equipped to handle the road. I wish him luck. He's going to need it.

Just listened to Open Arms again...I've always hated the song, but his performance of this song has floored me. I have always been fine with Journey's decision to hire him and I was excited for the album and tour, but now I literally cannot wait to see and hear more from him - properly recorded with Journey, and not on YouTube with his other band.

On a side note, I saw that the Open Arms clip was recorded on January 30. Has he still been performing in clubs regularly before coming back to the U.S. to practice for the tour? I hope this was kind of a farewell performance, and he's leaving the club scene and four hour shows behind...and not still doing them whenever he's on break from Journey.

Thanks for posting the links to the vids. Still wonder why the quality of them is so shitty. And doesn't anyone have any better quality vids and better shots like right up next to the band, to the side of them or even behind the band looking outward towards the band members and into the crowd? Or how about some footage of Arnel ten and fifteen years ago, anyone have anything like that? God there has to be some footage out there like this. The guy (Arnel) has been singing awesome like that since the 80's and there were always a packed house at the shows. It's amazing if no one has any footage of that earlier era. I'd be interested to see it if there was some out there to watch.

Arnel will be even better with Journey both in vocals and stage performance I believe. Because I've seen when he's excited on stage and it shows in his performance. I still have to say that in these videos posted on youtube, he was just going through the motions with some heart in it, but I've seen him put way more effort, energy and excitement into his performance then what I've seen so far in the recent clips on youtube.

They guys know they can't blow this.. I bet you will see less tour dates,They will cater to the guy! Watch.. He will be their most prized possession.. I don't think JSS's throat would have held up to Perry's songs very long.. The guys did him a favor..

Well I would think they would have started recording new songs eventually and not just gone on forever with only Perry's songs. Jeff's throat did a great job touring with those songs anyway.

Jeff has been in this business a VERY long time and touring for a VERY long time. He would have been just fine.

But he's fine being able to sing his own FANTASTIC catalog of music.

Arnel kicked some serious ass this time around. Everyone is talking about OA, and true, that was amazing. I personally have to go with SW for the win on this batch of clips. He is hitting the notes, jumping around, basically feeling the moment. That clip was fucking KICK ASS!!!! I gotta admit, I was unsure about him at first just like I was about JSS, but now Arnel has me sold just like JSS did. Assuming Journey pulls their heads out of their asses and actually does right by this guy, they do have a decent chance at publicity and success. The novelty of hiring someone from a different country alone has already garnered a bit of media coverage that until now was virtually nonexistant. This should be a fun ride, ladies and gentlemen. 8)

JSS NEVER sold me on Journey material. On his own material hell yes! Arnel's vocals seem to mesh very well with the melodic, chrorus, structure of Journey tunes. Can't wait for the new tunes.

Overall, I was not really a JSS in Journey fan, but songs towards the end of his tenure in the band I think were pretty awesome. On the other hand, Arnel is really on top of his game Journey-wise right now, almost immediately after bringing him in. The guy may even improve as the tour goes on! :D

As soon as Journey starts playing the majority of new songs, they are dead. Not what anyone wants to hear, but the chances of hits with new music is basically nil. Add to that, although it will upset a lot of people on the board, it doesn't matter WHO sings the hits, as long as it isn't Perry. Augeri, Soto, Arnel...doesn't matter to radio. None of them are a known quantity---and they are singing for Journey, who is not relevant.

Soto may have the range to do the material (or at least most of it), but so far, everyone who has toured with this material for extended period of time has blown out their voice. Who knows what would have happened there.

Arnel has a better chance over Augeri since his range is higher, but time will tell.

Some good points in here. However, Journey will NEVER play more than 2 or 3 new songs, nor should they. The GH are what people come and want to hear. Journey will sprinkle enough new songs in to satiate the appetite of the fans that dig new music. This keeps them happy and keeps the concerts from seeming lame...something they were rapidly becoming. Arnel also allowa them to go "retro" as he has the pipes to sing songs like Patiently, Something to Hide, After The Fall and a host of others. I wish Arnel, Jeff and Augeri all the best this year. I could very honestly see them all having outstanding years as they all have new material coming out. I will buy all 3.
