If Perry returned, only to do that, I would call it for what it would be - LAME!

Exactly. Not that he'd ever do that. I don't think he would.
But if something like that happened, I'd frown on it the same way I'm frowing on current Journey doing it.
He's no exception to being frowned on for dumb ideas.

I would. Leave it alone, I don't care who sang it. Granted, I'm not real big on covers as it is, regardless of the band or singer in question, but especially when it was good the first time. Leave it be.

so you're saying you would prefer Arrival or Generations with Augeri's vocals as opposed to having them re-recorded by Perry?!? Well, I guess I don't have to worry about being crucified on this board now....

Seriously though, I'm in agreement with you. Leave the "re-recording" to a live environment, regardless of who did the original. Of course, it's a business and money talks.

I get no news officially....I'm still a mushroom until someone decides they want to use me for publicity...but maybe I won't play along...

I heard from a source that the band spent a day with a cinematographer "making a video"....will dig for more.

it's highly likely that the video will be for second life. if i'm not mistaken, you can do something in second life to play a video of deen singing. not sure what song it is, but i do recall someone mentioning video.

Hopefully they will get this out to all the video outlets: Yahoo, MSN, VH1, VH1Classic, Fuse, Music Choice, Rhapsody, iTunes, EVERYWHERE! Not just 2nd Life (But I would bet MCC is on to something.)

Yes. That is 100% what I am saying.

Music is art. Art, to my way of looking at it, is unique and should remain unique. It can only be done that way ONCE, whether one views it as good, bad, excellent, extremely poor.... whatever. It came out the way it did for a reason and should be left alone.

If Steve Perry showed up tomorrow and said "I'm rejoining Journey and we're going to rerecord Arrival..." then my FIRST post about it would say "he has lost his fucking mind." Yes I make jokes... "he could sing a Tide commercial and it would be fine..." but if it came down to the reality of something like that happening... no. All jokes aside, that would be lame as shit.

Apples and Oranges argument.

1st: Perry's never coming back

But more importantly:

If he were to come back, he'd never re-record music created after he left with another singer, but let's say for the sake of argument that he would be interested in doing that.

You're going to tell me Steve Perry would re-record these songs as is, without reworking them to his creative liking? I'd bet he would change the melody choices, change the lyrics, change the arrangements (for the better I might add) to the point that they only resembled what they were originally. He'd want to put his spin on the songs and the band would let him. That's not what's happening with the Arnel fronted recordings, I guarantee you.

The only time I could ever see Perry re-record anything would be to pay homage to his influences (Marvin Gay, Sam Cooke, etc.).

Bullshit, irrelevant bullshit at that. The people attending the shows, if there really have been 2.5 million different people who've attended them, wouldn't have been there had it not been for Perry. Most of them don't even want to hear anything that didn't include Perry. Hell most of those people attending those shows ARE Perry fans, whether they'll admit it or not, or they wouldn't be Journey fans.

I disagree. Those people are JOURNEY fans. Steve Perry's solo tour's best nights are what Journey does on their worst nights.

Yes.
FTLOSM was 3 K seat theaters, where by and large Journey's played the 10-20K seat sheds for 10 years.

Yes, IMO if Journey were touring with Augeri or Arnel or some other similar sounding singer, and Steve Perry was touring at the same time with his own solo band, it would be Journey that would get the bigger crowds each night.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that as a knock on Perry, I am a huge fan of his, and I saw him here in Cleveland on his FTLOSM tour, he did a great job!

But the Journey name is even bigger than the Steve Perry name.

Like most corporations, once you leave you basically give up what you created in that corporation. This is no different. Are you trying to tell me that although 60% of the lineup that made those hits wants to tour and perform them that they're not supposed to because Perry won't/can't tour? And if their is any demand for those songs rerecorded they have every right to do so. Perry didn't have the foresight to know that his 10 year ban on them rerecording the hits wouldn't be long enough. Unlike Perry, Neal and Jon haven't retired, still love what they do and are able to perform. Maybe Perry does too, but I'll be damned if I know.

OK Dan, let's go through this one more time. I entered this conversation with this post:

ohsherrie wrote:I wish there was Rick. If the band's name had had Steve Perry in it, maybe, but because he was technically just another member of the band I'd assume that he would stop it if he legally could.

Steve Perry's voice was arguably Journey's trademark, but he has only very limited power to protect the trademark that is his voice.

I know some will say Neal's guitar was as much a trademark as Steve's voice, but I know of very few people who became Journey fans because of Neal's guitar. It was because of the voice they heard on the radio.

The magic of Journey couldn't be replicated by Steve with another band and it can't be replicated by the band with another voice because that kind of chemistry can't be copied. That's why they're now trying to scam people into believing their new CD has Perry on it by rerecording the GH to sell along with it.

I'm ashamed of them.

That's what I'm still saying. Nothing you've said changes the truth of that post.

Fair enough. I can agree with the majority of that with the exception of 2 things:

1) Journey's trademark was their music as a collective, collaborative entity. You hinted at this, but stopped short as you simply can't give any of the remaining members much credit.

2) They're not "trying to scam people into believing their new CD has Perry on it." That's simply not true. No one thinks Perry is on the new CD, or in the band for that matter, as much as you'd like to use that as an aid in your argument.

Dan, I agree with you in principle, and I share your venom for Steve P's "inactivity" over the years, BUT re: #2:

- The other day I mentioned the Summer tour lineup to a good friend of mine (Who is quite the music fan- like evryone from RATT to Rufus Wainwright) who got very excited UNTIL I told her "...but no Steve Perry", to which she retorted "Oh, then why go?"

I don't necessarily AGREE with that line of thinking (I was stoked to get a chance to see them w/ JSS, but so much for that right?) but I think there are PLENTY of folks out there who don't realize Steve P isn't in the band. MTV isn't a part of our lives anymore, and most people don't have the time or wherewithall to follow music news, so when they hear JOURNEY there assumption is STEVE PERRY.

For my 2 cents (which no one really asked for!) I think I would be just as put off by a Journey lineup WITH Steve but WITHOUT Neal. To me, you really need both of those guys. Kinda like the KINKS without one of the Davies boys...it might be cool to listen to, and I might buy a ticket, but it wouldn't quite be the same.

Very well said!

I know that there are still some people out there that do think that Perry is still in Journey. But I do not believe that Journey are trying to trick anyone into thinking that Steve Perry's still in the band. Hell, on that first tour with Augeri they were posting signs at the ticket windows saying that Steve Perry and Steve Smith were no longer in the band.

I think their motives for re-recording the past hits is to show people how similar that Arnel can sound like Steve Perry, and to also help sell more albums. Not to trick anyone.

There's really know doubt in my mind that Steve Perry will always be my second favorite singer, so I'm sure that I'm never going to like Arnel's singing as well as Perry's. But from what I've heard from the Youtube clips I think that Arnel's going to do a great job, and is capable of sounding a hell of a lot like Perry.

Its actually much simpler than that... the re-recording of some of the old stuff is part of the Walmart deal....

That's not a problem for Neal, he could play them perfectly in his sleep. He is the best guitarist.

As to whether Eddie could play his own perfectly, I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could?

Interesting. I'm wondering where the pro-JSS (or pro-Jeremey) crowd stands on this.

Speaking only for myself of course, (and I was in the pro-JSS crowd also) I'd have a problem with this no matter which singer we were talking about - JSS, Jeremey or Arnel. I just don't feel the classics should be redone, period, by any singer. Move on, do new stuff, strive for the same sound if that's what they fel should be done, but not the same SONGS.

What if Steve Perry reunited with Journey and they re-recorded them with him on vocals? Or if Steve Perry decided to re-record them with his own solo band?

But that's not the answer to my question.

What if he did?

It's a very fair question.

I think that the "Perry Loons" as some like to call them, would view things WAAAAAAAAAAY differently if Steve Perry decided to do the same thing.

Why in hell would Steve Perry rejoin Journey just to end up re-recording all those songs?

Oh alright - I'll play along. IF Steve Perry rejoined Journey and IF they re-recorded all the classic Perry/Journey hits WITH Perry redoing the vocals, I would STILL say "they have all lost their fucking minds." My position isn't going to change no matter which way Steve Perry is squeezed into this equation.

And if he did them with a solo band... I'd roll my eyes and I would STILL say "WHY?"
"Steve Perry covers Journey?" He'd be just as much of a joke as Journey currently is.
