do you prefer the captured version more than the studio one?

i don't know why it is and maybe i'm not the only one but i seem to prefer a lot of the 1981 captured version of songs instead of off the first three perry studio releases.i've always liked wheel in the sky better off of captured than the studio infinity version.i also think line of fire was way better on captured than the departure version.also just the same way seems superior on captured compared to the evolution version of the song.just seems like more heart,fire and energy can be heard in the live versions........

Captured was actually the first Journey album I bought in 1984. I had just gotten a new stereo system and figured since Captured was live, it would have the best songs. I nearly fainted the first time I heard "Stay Awhile" - it sealed my Perry fate right then and there. And "The Party's Over" put the icing on the cake!

By the time Captured was recorded, I'm sure Journey had played those song many many more times and had improved on them. They're one of the few bands that ARE better live than their studio work.

they need to release a captured show like they did the houston '81 escape show.i'm pretty sure it would sell just as good.i'd love to see one of gregg rollie's last shows with the band released on a DVD something like a cobo hall '80 show or something.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the time I prefer Live to studio. First 2 that come to mind are off of Captured are Just The Same Way and LTS. There is just some songs IMO that have always come across better live than studio for me. Lovin Touchin Squeezin is definitely one and Where Were You or Daydream, etc. To me Perry's vocals sounded more raw and powerful and not quite as high, Live, than he did, studio.

The studio ones are better for the most part. For instance, the live version of "Any Way You Want It" sucks compared to the studio. It's always sounded way too rushed live, which is the same they did with other tunes.

The songs on the captured album kicked ass because of the crappy recording of the originals. I remember seeing an interview with the band and Ross was complaining about how the bass was nonexistent, then Perry jokingly pointed out that Ross was the bass player.

Even if they were recorded with today's tech, Journey with Perry live just kicked ass and Perry was at his vocal peak on Captured.

In hindsight, I wish the band had spent more time in the studio than on the road.

i wouldn't see where it would hurt to put out a captured video on DVD that would maybe include dixie and the party is over on the set and maybe include a few interviews and special footage that has been seen before.they could easily make a lot on something like this.they don't have but two or three long form videos out there as it is.

I wonder if Perry is reluctant to do any more DVD's because it helps Neal and Jon? I'm not sure how much animosity or hatred there is between the three of them, but it's a possibility. Maybe Perry's saving that kind of income for a rainy day.

LTS on Greatest Hits Live beats the living shit out of every other version of that song, ever.

The Captured tracks that beat up the studio versions and leave them bleeding in the alley are the Departure tracks more than any of the others. "Do You Recall" does a pretty good number on it's Evolution courterpart also.

One complaint about the album though is that they didn't take ANY of the phenominal songs from the Houston show. Like Patiently (EASILY the most power I've ever heard from Perry), Precious Time, and Opened The Door. All of those from Houston KICKED ASS. I've got a few other boots from the Departure tour...but none of the others were as good as Houston.

Wheel and AWYWI in particular are NOT better to me on Captured than on the studio albums but a goodly # of the Inf, Ev, Dep tracks represented on Captured surpass their studio counterparts (for me).
Jury's out on L,T,S, too. I can't decide yet on that one.

BTW, odd note: the Captured version of Lights actually entered the charts 11 years after its original release when the band put it out as a single off Time3 in '92.
One more reason why Time3 is the reason box sets were invented.

i've always loved dixie highway.i also think 'the party's over' should've done way better than what it did on the charts.i think it hit 39 or 40 basically hitting the top 40 for one week or two.
