OT: Need Some Feedback

Postby ProgRocker53 » Thu Feb 14, 2008 4:58 am

I just joined a new band this week, it's called Psychedelic Breakfast. We're doing covers for now but eventually will transition into originals after we get comfortable with one another.

http://www.myspace.com/psychedelicfastbreak

We recorded two straight hours of us playing music and put up the three most "accessible" pieces. This was the first time the three of us had ever played together, these songs were done with absolutely no rehearsal.

Tell me what you think. I'm playing bass. Keep in mind that I've only been playing for 8 months now.. the two guitarists have been playing for 3-5 years or so.

I know I flub every now and then, but tell me where myself (and everyone as a whole) could improve.

Thanks!

(P.S. We may cover Wheel in the Sky.)

I'm a sucker for heavy guitar, so I had no problems with that (from a non-musician's perspective) seeing as you guys haven't played together long.

The vocals need work. Pitch problems with the singer on "Knockin on Heaven's Door" and "Hotel California". Geeze, now I sound like Randy Jackson.

The guy that sings those two songs actually sings better when he's not hacking away at a 12-string, but his guitar playing is so good we can't take it away from him. Haha.

Nice to see you are honestly open to criticism! ;)

Now, unfortunately I cannot listen to your stuff at work but I will try to check it out later!

Thanks, appreciate it.

Yeah I know I'm definitely not the best, but I want to hear opinions from people who are unbiased (unlike my old band and family members, haha) and people who know the ins and outs of music (unlike half the people I know).

If I know what I'm doing wrong, I can focus on that and improve it so I can get better. It's all about the progress.

Alot of people who have jammed with me are actually surprised I've only been playing since the summer.

Thank you Dave. I hated that avatar.

I haven't listened to your music yet because I'm just popping on here when I get a chance, but the name of the band intrigues me. I lived the psychodelic era, so is it psychodelic music you're doing?

Right now we're doing a range of classic rock covers (we have Dylan/Clapton, Grateful Dead, and Eagles songs up right now) that kinda display the kind of sound and vibe we're going to be going for. We'll be combining the spacey movements of Floyd, Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Rush and such with a more acoustic slant, plus we also have a penchant for some melodic pop rock ditties too. We won't be pigeonholing our genre much just yet, but with all of us being all about the prog/psych movement... it's obvious that we'll be somewhere in that area.

Sounds like you're all about the same level of musicianship, which is good. No one stands out, etc, etc. I'd say have some fun with it and perhaps in a few months or so there may be something marketable for local gigs, etc. Vocalist is probably the weakest link at this point.

Write your own tunes.

It's interesting that you should say that. Over at the Music Saloon we have a Barroom(forum) designated for progressive rock. I didn't know what that term really meant so I ask the resident aficionado( :P ) about it and he linked me to some clips on YouTube. I told him it sounded like an evoled form of the psychodelic music of the late 60s and early 70s.

Like I said we're only doing covers to start out until we get comfortable with one another. Myself and one of the guitarists got together last night and put the chords and bassline together for our first original, we'll be hitting up the other guitarist tomorrow to work on leads and some lyrics.

Interesting that you say the vocalists are the weakest link... most of our friends and peers are absolutely enamored with the two guitarists' voices. I have a singer buddy that is training himself to do opera, but he loves rock and roll too... I'm thinking about asking the guys if he can join up with us, but I'm afraid it'd be one of those ego-poppers and want to avoid conflict as much as possible.

The divisive force in the last band I was in was a lead singer who had a horrible voice and waaaay too much control, even though he didn't know a cord from a chord. He was buddies with the lead guitarist and bullied the band around in terms of song themes and all creative direction. We could've gone somewhere with a much better vocalist... I mentioned that to the guitarist, and my ass ended up getting tossed out of the band a week later. Hahaha!

Oooh.. I shall have to wander over to this Music Saloon, first I've heard of it. Got a link? :)
