Frontiers 25th Anniversary

Postby annie89509 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:33 am

I bought the re-mastered Frontiers with the 4 extra songs when it came out, but only lately, have I really really listened to it, and now I'm hooked on it. Even coming from my cheap, antiquated cd player/boombox, the whole album seemed pumped up and the sound crystal clear. Most people only know the first 5 songs (from the singles and MTV videos). I myself used to think the B-side tracks were fillers. With the re-mastered version, though, the music really shines. Neal and Smitty, especially, kicked ass in all the songs. Jon did a lot of cool things with the keys, too. Ross, sorry, I'm not that musically inclined, can't pick out the bass parts in a song if my life depended on it. I do know that they got Randy Jackson to play bass in After the Fall, so don't know what was up with Ross. The whole album has sort of a futuristic vibe, so the cover fits perfectly (despite sour grapes from HH, who claimed he wanted scarab and the controlling SP wanted Elmo and Steve got his way).

I'm especially intrigued by Edge of the Blade. What does the song mean? It never fails to crack me up when in between verses, Steve says: "It's sharp .... be careful ... don't cut yourself". lol. And how about Back Talk? A lot of people hate this song. But I think it's fun to listen to Smitty beating on the drums and hitting the cymbals and SP doing his rap imitation (before rap was even in vogue). Did Steve set the trend, lol.

I know there are a lot of hardcore Frontiers fans here. What is your favorite song off the record?

"Send Her My Love"

There are so many "woven-in" Steve P. backing tracks - very subtle...

Yes, the re-master sounds so much better than the original, even I can hear that.

Worldwide I believe it's their number 1 seller.

Nora, you're the expert. On this song, I hear subtle nuisances in the vocal parts (reverbs?) that was not on the original. Am I right or just hearing things?

Compared to Escape? I still think Escape is their singular masterpiece.

I could be wrong, but I think the Greatest Hits album has probably sold more. Frontiers is my favorite album, too. The old "B" side (remember those days?!) is still one of my favorite things to listen to.

...since when is Steve's voice a NUISANCE...??!!

Sorry...couldn't resist & I know you meant "nuances".

If I tried to explain all the backing parts, I'd look MORE loonish than I already do!

I haven't heard the "Remastered" version...but, the backing voxlines are probably more pronounced - that could be what you're hearing.

haha, can't believe I did that. I said nuance and typed nuisance  . You don't have the re-mastered version? Well, I still want my question answered, so I'm going to have to send you that track, and you can analyze it for me.
