Love, love, love "Empire" but hate, hate, hate Silent Lucidity. From anyone else, on any other album, I probably would have liked it, but it just seemed to mellow and ballad-y for Queensryche for me. It's their more powerful, passionate, harder edged songs that blow me away. 8)

I never really cared for that song, either, but it served its purpose., and got them a lot of attention. "Selling out" does has its benefits, and at least it was only for one song. A Queensryche ballad that I absolutely love is "I Will Remember" off of The Warning.

Silent Lucidity was probably the most popular song Ryche ever had.. well that got airplay anyway. I remember hearing that song on MTV at what it seemed like every hour. It doesnt compare to the other songs in their catalog but you gotta admit it DID put them on the map.. or atleast helped.

and now I must go out to my car and get that cd.

Sadly, as with just about any popular hard rock/heavy metal band, if you don't put out a sappy ballad, you don't get airplay. Unfortunately, one of these can also come back to bite you in the ass and that's all people tend to know you for.

That's the one I remember hearing the most on the radio and MTV. I was hoping to hear it at one of the shows, but no luck. LOL "Bridge" and "Real World" (two songs I love) I noticed didn't get a very good crowd reaction.

Nobody knows those songs.. LOL! I believe Real World was originally on the Soundtrack from the movie "Last Action Hero" which flopped in the early 90s. I have the soundtrack..

This is completely off-topic, but Rip - do you have any of those promo shots on hand from Don's 1990 solo tour? I know there are some good photos of Don and the band (Norum, etc.) out there but I can't seem to find them.

I'm PC authoring some Don Dokken DVDs at the moment and I'm in search of good images to use.

Hey, ya know, I don't -- best to try Google images to see what you can come up with. I know there are a few out there. Did you say you were making DVDs? Cool! Let me know what goes on them, because I might be interested in a copy.

I found a few black and whites of Don's band but I thought I saw a color one out there a while back. Anyway, I just got 4 Don Dokken solo shows in the mail today:

12-7-90 - New York, NY - The Ritz
1-30-91 - Oklahoma City, OK - Myriad Convention Center
2-17-91 - Tampa, FL - Unknown venue
3-11-91 - Osaka, Japan - Festival Hall

As far as I know, only 5 DVDs exist from Don's Up from the Ashes tour. The one I'm still missing is 1-29-91.

I'd be more than happy to send you copies of them once I get them authored with chapters and stuff. They're pretty fun to watch.

"Silent Lucidity" is a great song and not a sell-out at all. It's very similar to what Metallica did with "The Unforgiven".

BTW, "I Will Remember" was the last track on "Rage for Order", not "The Warning". I especially love the version of that tune from the MTV Unplugged session.

You are correct on all counts... I guess one thing that I never cared about in "Silent Lucidity" was the strings... To my ears, I've heard too many modern bands add string orchestra to a ballad single, I guess in some self-important effort to sound sweeping and epic, and it just became cheesy to me. That stupid Smashing Pumpkins song was a great example, as was "November Rain" by GnR. Songs like that will ruin a band for me, and maybe it's their label that pushes them to do it, but who know... Queensryche gets a free pass with me, and I do think "Silent Lucidity" is a great song, but it did border dangerously on self-importance... My opinion, anyway.

And thanks for correcting me on "I Will Remember"... you can tell it's been a while since I've pulled those discs out... haha! And yes, I've always loved the MTV unplugged version of it, as well as "Della Brown". Outstanding!
