Is Journey back with Sony....?

Postby jrnyjetster » Sat Feb 23, 2008 1:31 am

:?: ...or have they signed with a NEW label? I figured since they got big time producer Kevin Shirley again for this new CD, a big time label must surely be involved? Is this Wal-Mart deal we've been reading about, confirmed? Does Wal-Mart actually have their own label, by the way?? I don't shop there, so I wouldn't know. I know the Eagles signed an exclusive agreement with them and their new album has sold pretty well, I understand.

The new recording was financed by WalMart, I don't believe they have a label. I think it is being released exclusively through Wal Mart and Sams Club just like the Eagles record, which was released as "The Eagles Recording Company" or something similar, so Wal Mart footed the bill.

I once read where the Eagles sold 700,000 in the first week or so.
I love this idea. Record labels and record stores were just a necessary evil.
I think this an interesting debate though. Is WM now a label, or just a distributor?

So then question,

if this album is only being sold in Walmart how is it going to be sold around the world? Surely on the internet?

ASDA (Britains big supermarket) is owned by Walmart but i cant see them stocking the new CD

hmm

If this deal is real, then I'd say just look for wherever The Eagles last album sold.

The Eagles and Journey are on different playing fields, you cant believe they are going to see even a 1/4 of what the eagles sold first week(and i'm being nice)

Oh sure. No doubt. If Journey sells even 100k, it should be considered it a success.

I'm gonna go out there and say the new album will sell at least 300,000 stateside and about 500,000 worldwide.

I think the Eagles financed the cd themselves, and Walmart made a deal to release it exclusively. There may be an agreement where Walmart would have exclusive sale rights for a specific time, and after that they could distribute it through other avenues.

Question is, can you get a copy of the Eagles new cd anywhere else? I bought mine at Walmart.

The deal must of be exclusive to USA. In Britain the disk was sold in a variety of stores.

Eagles CD was licensed per territory. USA was WalMart, elsewhere it was mroe traditional methods. Not all record labels are as badly run as the US majors.

Thanks for the info Andrew.

Well now that Journey has become suddenly more "international" the Walmart deal would really only help them here (US). It makes some sense in that Journey hasnt really been selling too much post Perry cd's here in the US, and the Walmart exposure could help considerably. Many classic bands are having the same problem selling new music.

Are these overseas shows a ploy to garner excitement and perhaps a distribution deal? No matter what, Journey needs to find a new way to sell music. The first step is too make some damn good music. Time will tell.
