"Will Perry see Arnel as a threat to his legacy ?"

No

I do think John/Neal would love to have one more "real" hit writing as "Journey" before they call it quits. Maybe they have a few contenders ready to go and perhaps Arnel has the vocal chops to give them a real chance. If "Journey" could have another real radio/video hit that would have to ruffle a few Perry feathers.

A heavy rockin Journey song that's a hit featuring JSS at vocals probably wouldn't bother SP at all, but a flowing ballad that had a singer who sounded similar to SP would HAVE to make him get a little razzled. ;)

A threat? no chance.

Mark my words, Journey will never have another hit song or chart toppings songs ever again! - the only chance would be, if Perry was to return... oh and hell freezing over, and the music industry turning upside down.

One of the big problems is that Arnel is already being compared and branded a clone already, and Perry in his prime is still unmatched to this day, end of story. So which fool is going to give Journey a grammy or a hit single after what they have been doing the past 10 years.

No disrespect to the guys, but seriously - without Perry, there is no chance of re-capturing that sound.

Well they could recapture the sound but maybe not the success. Who knows for sure? They need to have a damn good song attached with some kind of brand or movie or something. Perhaps a duet with another talent? That or get their collective arses onto the final of American Idol or some such purely for the recognition and bump in record sales.

well im gonna stick my head in the lions cage her...

Leaving the politics & JSS issues aside,
The current Journey line-up is good. The guys can still play really well.. Arnel Pineda has a fantastic voice and im sure the live gigs will be enjoyable..
However, and this is from someone who'se not taken interest in Steve Perry or Journey until recently, everyone needs to do some trawling of youtube and DVD's of 1981 era gigs.. The guys were on fire..

The whole band had real drive and passion (and a dose of youth on their side) and Steve Perry's voice was astonishing.. I watched a clip from a link posted on here of 'Mother, Father' live at that time and it really was something to behold.

This is not to knock the current line-up but honestly back then was Journey at its best.

Cutting to the chase, Steve Perry has done enough to leave his legacy firmly intact.. As good as they are now but the words 'Journey' and 'Steve Perry' will always go together hand in hand.

If Perry feels that anyone is a threat to his legacy then he needs to get on some meds.

Unless Perry crawls out his hole, doesn't see his shadow, and somehow rejoins Journey his legacy cannot be touched.

As for performing new songs live, only a handful of artists even attempt that anymore, because everytime a band says, "here is something new" the place empties out. Besides Bruce and U2, who else plays something "new" live for the fan? Hell, Neal and Cain have been as you say, in every joint in America. Would you rather play Hollywood Bowl or Pete's burger bar? The Journey name still carries tons of weight, and yes, Perry is responsible for at least half of it. However, two things here. 1- They are entitled to use it, and 2- Perry has the option of coming back and either resurrecting it or adding to it, and sadly he chooses neither. His choice and I respect it. But I also respect the fact that no one member "owns" the name of the band.

The bold text from your reply above Dean is the EXACT reason why I have lost respect for this band and why I feel they are making a mistake now and have been for a decade or so.

Music is (or should be) ART FIRST. Money and success should follow the creation of valuable ART.

Oh come on. Not all music should be regarded as art. Some of it is pure entertainment and nothing more. Think pro wrestling. Its not a serious sport, its sports entertainment.

As good as it is Journey's music is not art in the same way as say Springsteen's or Neil Young's but it is a damn sight more entertaining! There is no serious artistic meaning or message in the majority of Journey's output unless of course you count the 'message of love'!

That being said I regard both Schon and Perry as artists of the very highest calibre in their respective fields.

I await the witty response and frankly overused cool shades emoticon with baited breath!

You aren't a musician are you?
