I totally agree, even though those two were his biggest influences as a singer. Man, I'd pay real money to sound anything close to one of my bigger influences.

Who?

Not Dokken is it?

Yes...I answered it a few posts up.

I know that's the answer to the Scorps ? but is that the answer to Rip's biggest influence?

I really like the song “Holiday” from their Lovedrive album; actually everything on that album is pretty amazing. I like older stuff like “We’ll Burn The Sky” and “The Sails of Charon” from their Taken by Force album as well. Their 2004 Unbreakable album is a solid release, I like every song on that album.

Hey, now, no Dokken-baiting on the board! :P Seriously, that's kind of a hard call, because many of my favorite singers have very distinctive and recognizable voices (Steve Perry, Jack Russell, John Schlitt, just to name a quick few), and sound-alikes never seem to have much of a shelf life in the industry, unless you are a Britney pop-tart clone. But I guess for me, having a short shelf life would be much better than having no shelf life at all! :P If I could have a sound much more like Kelly Hansen, I'd be really happy... :P

No baiting, just didn't know if you were a fan or would consider him an "influence"! :) I wasn't sure what I would think of Kelly Hansen all these years later - having seen him back in 1986 when Hurricane played at my college and in concert a few years later opening for Stryper - and then last year with Foreigner. I was pretty blown away, he was great!!

Back to the thread topic - I just found out yesterday that the Scorpions put out an album recently. I am digging some of the new songs...

When I was a young pup growing up in Minneapolis, you had to prove you were not a music nerd or risk getting roughed up and jam sandwiches smashed in your hair on the school bus.

There were five rock bands- Dokken, Van Halen , Motley Crue, Ratt, and the Scorpions - and you had to be conversant with at least three of them to prove you weren't a sissy. I proved my worth by scribblin lyrics from Motley Crue's shout at the devil all over my desks in 5th period english class, and ensuring that I could quote the lyrics from the lesser know songs off of Ratts out of the Cellar and the Scorp's - Love at First Sting albums . As I became an instant fan of Scorps songs like "Bad Boys Running Wild , and Big City nights.

Anything off the Love at First Sting album brings back strong memories !

They are -- they both use a similar nasally falsetto on their higher notes. I hate the term "nasally", but I really don't know another way to describe it. It's not a slam at all -- it's a very signature sound that has defined them vocally. I wonder if one was an influence on the other? Don filled in on vocals for some Scorpions recording sessions early on while Klaus was recovering from vocal chord surgery. Wonder if he was picked because they had similar voices... I'll have to ask him sometime...

ANYTHING off Savage Amusement...gawd, I love that album!! I remember someone playing the album Lovedrive at a college party and having to run out and get that. Good stuff. My favorite off Love at First Sting has to be "As Soon As The Good Times Roll"

Their new album is fantastic too!
