don't know much about "steps lower," but i do know jeff scott soto can sing circles around many. it's cool if you don't get it. i thought jeff was the best thing to happen to journey after the embarrassing fiasco of tapegate. his integrity and talent was more than enough to redeem the band in my eyes. letting him go was a huge mistake in my opinion. i hate to say i'm apathetic at this point, but i really don't care what they do anymore. kinda sucks.

In hindsight I think the band did him a favour. They behaved badly - despicably in fact, he behaved with dignity. Your behaviour defines you.
Jeff is cool and classy. The band are not.
I had not heard of JSS prior to all this, but I am now a fan. I think there are many more like me.
I won't forget how they treated this guy, but I won't forget how classy he was when it happened, either.

And the version of Edge of the Blade being discussed sounds great to me! It's dirty and it ROCKS!

JSS was able to sing the older catalog/dirty dozen, albeit not like Perry did, but, he did provide a rougher edge to those songs. The "new frontier" of Journey, with JSS on lead vox, I believe, would have taken them the route of what many call VanHagar, and more towards what Neal ALWAYS has wanted to do, which was take Journey away from the ballads and more to the rock side.

And what still baffles me is, why did NEAL suddenly change his mind about this new "direction" for Journey? I believe Jon Cain is basically calling the shots now and Neal's just going along with it.

Look at Neal's career. Historically, he's never really been the 'leader of the band' in anything he's ever done. Yes, he's a leader in his craft and in the industry. But management was never his forte. He left that up to HH. He also gave the reins to Perry. (He said that.) He gave them back to Perry when TBF came up, and he continued to let Perry drive for a couple years after that. With Augeri, they just toured to death with Azoff at the helm. Arrival was run by Kalodner & Shirley. Red13 was an experiment, and Generations was a no-show.

Way back when, I predicted to a few close friends that with JSS, Cain would say in the end that it just wasn't Journey. I believe this is what happened. And I agree that while Schon owns the band, he's letting 'Cain drive the boat'. Schon just wants to play guitar and not deal with any of the other crap.

Btw, my gut is that Cain will eventually tire of AP too. He'll rationalize that lead singer is more than just a voice, and AP never really fit the Journey mold. We'll see.

I really loved that song and Periled Divide was just awesome!!
