I could tell you but sadly I think I'd be pounced on and branded a liar for my version. We just wrote the song together (Neal, Jonathan and myself) while I was there.

I won't pounce on you or brand you as anything, cap'n.
Do you think you could PM me and tell me how the song was conceived? I'd love an insight into Journey's process, so if you could tell me how the song was done, it would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

So what if its a mix between BGTY and Never Too LateAs long as it makes it to radio, stays in their set, and keeps the crowd rockin' I have no problem with it. BTW Jeremy, Do you get any royalties since they are using a song you co-wrote? Not trying to start a war here, just want some insight.

Cliffs Notes version is:
Neal came up with the music and demo'd the song for the band. We knocked around some arrangements and played through it a few times while I scat sang some nonsense lyrics and melodies. The "Never walk away" tag I kept coming back to stuck with Jonathan, and I wrote down some basic themes I had for the song and the chorus to leave with him. Lo and behold the next morning he had come up with most of the lyrics. I changed around a few things in his version to flow off the tongue a little better and pitched the background vocal structure to the band as well. To me Neal's demo had a 90210-ish quality to it, and the chord progression was similar to BGTY. I felt that with a different lyric theme the song was powerful enough to overcome that comparison, because it was really a feel good song in the vein of earlier material. I didn't know it would be used on the record until they finished recording with Kevin and Arnel, so that was a cool surprise...So here's hoping it's on the DVD too, so I get paid double royalties!I have 1/3 cowriting credit with Neal and Jonathan, and will get the agreed on publishing royalties.....

I wish it was a cross, but it's not. Change out the lyrics and you have BGTY. The chords, the vocal melodies and harmonies are BGTY through and through. Highly doubt you will ever hear this song and BGTY played live in the same set. It would leave the audience scratching their heads wondering why they're playing the same song twice.
If any of this stuff gets into radio rotation, I'll be shocked. Either way, if it happens at all, this track won't be the one to do it. It will be a ballad. This kind of music doesn't get airplay in today's music world. Melodic rock, unfortunately, just isn't the mainstream anymore. Can't wait to hear studio recordings of the other songs though. Hopefully they're more original along the lines of Remember Me than rehashing ROR or Frontiers hits.

Just putting it out there.

I'm not getting the reference because I'm going out of my way not to listen to the you tube versions of any other songs. I'm waiting for the studio tracks before I judge further. Trying to be fair overall.
