Two Steves: Lukather and Perry in the studio 2007!

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but some may have noticed a "Steve Perry" being thanked in the liner notes of Lukather's latest solo album. During the recording of the album last year, Lukather also hinted that there was a "special guest" visiting his studio. Now, 2+2=4, and Lukather recently said this on the Toto Network:

"yeah thats "the" Steve Perry. He is an old friend and neighbor and he came down to hang on a few sessions. I TRIED to get himn to sing something but he declined. He is a good guy and a great singer. We all want to hear something from him. You have to ask him. He liked my stuff and that is cool and we have a meal once in a great while. Thats as deep as it is. He was just a good vibe that why I thanked him.
Too bad the rest of my credits got fucked up. hahaha

Luke and I talked at length about this Friday night. Also told me that Steve didn't want to sing on the record so he didn't push it.

Poor SP. Its almost as if singing is his enemy now... Will we ever know why he is like this ? I think he can not perform to his own expectations and therefore wont do it... Sucks..

True that, would love to hear him sing again, but it's his life. Good to see he's still dipping his toes in the musical pool though.

Singing is definitely his enemy now. It's a love hate relationship for a guy who artistically can no longer stand the sound of his own singing voice.

I wonder if any of those laser surgery's would apply to his situation? I'm sure he must have looked into it.

I'd love to see Perry at least lay down some bass and/or drums for somebody's record, he's pretty good at both of those instruments right?

that being said, what benefit does it get him other than all the internet nerds saying that Perry is again singing in a studio...and there might be a new album to follow because if he is singing, then he obviously enjoys it, and therefore must be thinking about releasing something and going on tour and maybe even rejoining Journey. It's a one-way street with an ending that he doesn't want to go down.

He's not getting paid to sing on Luke's cd, and doesn't need the money anyways. All singing does is bring unwanted attention and spotlight to him--which he has done very well trying to avoid for several years. If he wants to go hang out in a recording studio and be friendly, let him. It probably gets him out of the house. He's out of the music business by his own doing--no reason to forcefully bring him back in kicking and screaming. He knows how to re-enter should he choose to.

Nope, I've heard from multiple sources that Perry was a drummer and bassplayer before he ever became a frontman.

I've also heard he's a better bassist than Ross.

well, if he really loves music and singing so much, it obviously has other outlets other than recording, otherwise he would have done a LOT more in the last 10 years.

Between you and me, I'd prefer to remember the guy as a great singer who knew when to get out, than someone who stayed around long past their welcome. There's a lot of recordings of the 94 tour that sound very good--and at least one that I have that is downright awful to the point that the show should have been cancelled. I've seen Lou Gramm struggling out there, and have the respect for him to continue, but wondering at the same time why.

I'd prefer Perry to stay gone, than to come back and be a shell of who he used to be.

I pretty much agree with you, if he ever did come back and was anything less than perfect, ya gotta know some of the more rabid Journey fans would tear him to shreds. :evil:

It's his life and he gave us the best of what he had!

I do not think that you could find two more polar opposite guys in music. One is arguably one of the hardest working musicians in a generation who continuously busts his ass. The other one... very gifted and talented. Yet chooses to sit on his talent for over a decade. I do not get Steve Perry. He does not write, record or perform. And he does not explain why he chooses not to. He just hangs around the business resting on his laurels. And yet he is idolized. :roll:

Really, I prefer that he sing just to ME...

I think it is great that he still is around music even if he isn't making it. I would find it very sad if he shunned that. He has always hung out at studios - even before he was a singer he worked as an engineer - he's just doing what he has always done. God, I would love to be able to read any lyrics he's written (he's stated before he is always writing)...wish he would even write for others like he did with David Pack.

Perhaps he doesn't feel dissatisfied.
Maybe, just maybe, he's fine the way he is?

I love how it always becomes attributed to he can't, or he won't because he can't (or thinks he can't, depending who you ask).
Maybe he just plain doesn't feel the urge, or has nothing driving him to it.

Like I've said before.. Some are like football players that the high and attention is so great that its like a drug and they hang around knowing their best isn't good enough..SP got out when he knew he was declining..Just never wanted to say never..I also believe that he didn't feel comfortable singing on a whim like that..I mean,why not throw everyone a bone and sing one song,a good duet with Luke..Why not help his friend out ? Because that would have sold a trillion records just on Perry alone,he knew this,Luke knows this and half SP's buddy's in the industry would be calling him the next day and he didn't want to deal with the comeback questions..I would have opened a big can of worms..

Why does singing on one simply song have to become so complicated???

I think his voice is gone.

Sad but, that is the only conclusion I can draw from all this.

Steve is a diplomatic gentleman
The song didn't resonate with him.
He had his reasons
simple as that...

When he's moved
He'll be happy to lend his voice to a song
Just takes alot to move the stone these days...

It's the evil paradox of OCD. You try and try so relentlessly to keep things clean and perfect, but eventually you give in to all the other forces against you (delusionally, which becomes emotionally). You realize that you're no longer able to control certain things natural, ie, social evolution and mostly age. So rather than fight all that to make something as you think it should be, you simply resign.

However, it's not defeat. It's rising above. You let 'all the factors' have their way and distance yourself with the understanding (rationale) that you're better than that. Are you really? Perhaps not, maybe so, but it's okay because your maturity allows you that choice.

You know you can still do things the way you want. "You can't tame the lion" ...and they know that too. So the situation becomes a very polite agreement. "It's just the rain." we say.

...at least that's what my therapist tells me...
