State passes droopy pants law

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - The Florida Senate wants public school students to pull up their pants. Lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches.

It won't become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure.

Florida could join several southern U.S. towns and cities that have passed "saggy pants" laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement -- wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.

Supporters say schools sometimes don't properly police dress codes and parents are often "under aware" of what their kids are wearing to school.

Critics say the measure is unnecessary, arguing that appearance and dress codes should be the responsibility of school districts and parents.

Despite being the butt of jokes, the bill's sponsor, Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat, has said the fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex.

"All we're trying to do now is trying to inform folks that we have a fad now that does not have a very good origination," Siplin said. "We're trying to make an example in school," he added, saying it would help students get jobs and a degree.

The Florida city of Riviera Beach passed its own saggy pants law Tuesday, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.

Leave it to those fuck ups in Florida to pass such a moronic law! While I think the style of young kids is ridiculous, it certainly doesn't need to be legislated! Tell Florida lawmakers to spend their time on how to fix their idiotic election system. Surely, these lawmakers must have some more pressing issues to tend to! I think they should pass a law prohibiting all the old fucks in Florida, on weekend passes from the cemetary, from wearing their pants up to their nipples

It doesn't need to be made a law though. The school system needs to make students adhere to a dress code. It's not something lawmakers need to be wasting their time on.

Don't sass me Rick! I want NO saggy pants, and I want it NOW! How would you know anything about saggy pants down in Texas? Those damn pants are so damn tight down there that you can tell how much change someone has in their pockets!

I do think you have a good point on the school code though. That's a start, but I think society needs some kind of standards too. It is individual choice, but when you're exposing "Sensitive" body parts, somethings gotta give! There HAS to be some kind of standard in place to stop people from going to a damn grocery store in a thong, or a birthday suit for that matter.

As a dad, I can't disagree with what you're saying. I just think it's beyond absurd for ANY state to pass laws on a teenager's dress code. I'm 37 years old, and I can tell you that I saw some pretty ridiculous things back in the 80's, and most of our parents had VERY questionable dress codes back in the 60's! Where does it end? To me, it's a VERY slippery slope! Pretty soon, those jackasses in Florida will be passing laws saying teenagers cannot have jewelry through their nose or any tatoos! Let me make it VERY clear that I am appalled at the way most teenagers look, and if my son ever came home with saggy pants, tatoos, or jewelry through his face, I'd shove my foot so far up his ass, he'd have to have it surgically removed! I just think state lawmakers need to keep their noses out of the fashion trends of teenagers, regardless of how ridiculous they might be!

Gary Siplin is one of the worst Senators we have in our state. I agree it should be a school issue, not a state issue. He was actually arrested not long ago, but got off on appeal. Yet he still gets elected over and over.

I see your points John, but I think there needs to be something in place to prevent ass cheeks from being exposed! I don't give a damn about piercings or nose rings, but when someone exposes parts of their bodies that should remain clothed...we've got a serious problem as a society. What's next...see-through pants? Why not just let guys walk around with their dicks hanging out!???

You make good valid points, but the line has to be drawn in the sand somewhere doesn't it? I think every person who pulls this kind of shit should be charged with indecent exposure. I bet they'd pull their shit up in a hurry then! Again, JMHO but if nothings done...it only escalates!

Two things cross my mind when I see kids wearing droopy pants, 1) they like walking around like they got a few pounds of shit in their pants, 2) their pants are conveniently half way down so they can take it up the ass by a freak of nature in San Francisco.

But in all reality this was a gang style back in the late 80's/early 90's if memory serves me correctly. What it was is kids in the projects would do this to signify that they've got older/bigger brothers and that the clothes are being passed down from the older/bigger brother to the younger brother, thus the reason the pants were too big for them to fit properly. This was basically a sign not to fuck with so in so because he's got an older bigger brother who'd not hesitate to kick your ass if need be for fucking with the younger brother. This droopy style originated by the project dwellers from the hood. And then for some retarded reason the white rich kids thought it was also cool to walk around with a sack of shit in their pants.
I've never eaten a piece of sushi I didn't thoroughly enjoy.

I gotta agree with most here. As much as I dislike the saggy britches thing, legislating it is absolutely stupid. What's the next law? Allowable hair cuts? No birkenstocks? Fish sticks on Tuesdays? This is so laughable, I'm surprised I'm even taking part in this discussion.

The school should have standards. And what about personal responsibility? Where are the parents?

I hate the saggy assed pants and the underwear/asses showing bullshit. I think schools should absolutely have dress codes that prohibit them. In fact, I think all schools should have uniforms. I would also encourage all public places(ie: malls, restaurants, theaters, event venues, etc.) including that in their "no shirts, no shoes, no service" statement.

I don't think it should be legislated though.

The same conservatives who say they want smaller government and don't want government interference in our lives are the very ones who want to legislate morality, and dress codes , but not business and professional ethics.

All law, to one degree or another, is someone's representation of morality. Anyway, government has no business regulating dress codes and I can't think of any conservative I know that is in favor of them doing so.

I suppose that libs who push moralistic legislation like Affirmative Action aren't really letting their morals get in the way then, are they? Or did you conveniently ignore that nice "little" nugget? Image

You never say anything respectfully. Everything is always someone else's fault and you're never wrong, are you? There's always got to be some barb in your statement to stick in your opponent, even when you're supposedly being "respectful". The only reason you think you win arguments is because you're too darned blind to notice when your ass has been whipped.
