If you want to hear Pure melodic bliss, listen to "The letting go" on Luke's new cd. I'm just so glad that this guy was/is so talented and that I had the chance to grow up to his music Image

Steve DID start singing in the room and the guy can still sing great.
THAT voice is still there. At least what I heard.
It is HIS choice to do what he does and why? I dont know.

Haha, never a doubt. All the people that have actually heard Steve say this. Everybody else is just speculation and has no credibility.

But so many on both sides of the issue are unwilling to take what he says as what he means and the only thing that he means. They try to look beyond the words for some underlying message and use it to bolster their personal opinion or argument. :?

And then they wonder why he doesn't talk to the fans more.

Could not agree more. Why does everyone always second guess the words of famous people? And it is ALWAYS, as you say, to bolster their opinion. People want to give a wink and a nod as if they know the whole story or they know how someone is doing based on a single comment from years ago. It's crazy. It's all so nutty.

Criticism? He's not getting "jacked up" over criticism. He's pissed at self-righteous know-it-alls spouting speculation and garbage all over the Internet.

Like who?

I believe what Lora is trying to say is all the blowhards who say Perry can't sing, and really have NO idea that he can't, is what pisses her off. It would be one thing if Neal or Bettencourt cam in here and said that, but of course they never would, which leaves us with people who haven't the slightest clue. Yes, I was guilty of it a long time ago, but some still think they know the intricacies of Mr. Perry..and they don't.

Mr. L is a fucking legend.

I have said it ALL before, but the respect I have for the man constantly compounds the more I read.

Now, talking about constantly compounding - it is time for another viewing of Falling In Between Live DVD.

..and without feeding the fire - that would be one HELL of a Fucking classic album (Perry/Luke/Goodrum)

Rock on Luke....

The next time you see Steve Perry, tell him Greg will come to house and mow his lawn if Perry will sing for us again! Heck, I'll even mow it with one of those old timey manual lawnmowers! ;)

I have a great Lukather story. Years ago, I guess 7 years by now, he was doing some stuff in a project called White Dove, or something like that. Was a four-piece doing old Jeff Beck and the like. Killer stuff.

Anyway, my daughters were into Brittney Spears at the time and the music in the house was driving me nuts. So I decided to drag my 6 year old son to this show, which didn't start until some really late hour, maybe 11. We were near the back of the line and by the time we got in, I could not find two chairs together. This was a small club in LA, mind you. Maybe 50-60 seats. My living room was bigger.

So we were standing next to the stage looking for some kind person to move over and let my me and my kid sit down. No chance. Lukather came out and was getting ready to start and started talking with us.

Wait - I hate long stories and this one's getting too long. Short of it is he brought us chairs and sat us right in front of him, hooked my son up with TP for the ears, bought our drinks, comments throughout the show on my son and how it was good to see younger kids exposed to that music. Fortunately, his language was SO foul, it was over my son's head. He hugged him at the end. It was killer. I'll always remember that.

On the way home, my 6 year old says, "So dad, was that your friend?" Clueless to the legend he had just seen. But he knows now.

Luke - You were cool to us that night. I'm sure you can be a great guy, an asshole, a leader, a lost soul... I do not think of you as a super super-human hero. But you are one of the greatest players out there, period. Thanks for that one moment and for the years of putting it down for us to enjoy.

I've always said anyone who said Perry can't sing anymore is a fool. Shit, if guys like Frankie Vallie are still out there, you honestly think SP can't sing? Is he gonna sing like Escape or Departure? Hell no, he didn't do that 22 years ago on RoR or 12 years ago on TBF. But come on, barring a complete vocal chord rupture or something traumatic like that, you don't lose talent like that. I think Perry wants to go out "on top." He probably knows he can bring it on a given night but has some doubts about his ability to hold up over a tour.

On the flip side, if Perry's voice were really shot, I don't think Luke or any other self-respecting musician would come right out and say he was fried. But, that aside, I'd have full confidence in Perry going out and singing a sprinkling of 2 hour shows with rest and recovery time in between. No doubt the man could still do it in his sleep. Cool to hear from Luke.

Ok. Gonna share my thoughts, which I was talking with Lora about yesterday.

In 1994, I saw the warm-up show for Steve Perry’s solo tour. I had gotten there way early, for some reason. I was able to walk in and watch the sound check, thanks to a friend who’s name will go unmentioned - Lora. :D I suppose this was a much longer sound check than usual, it being the first show in front of an audience. I cannot even tell you how blown away I was. The things he was doing with his voice were flat out amazing. And I am sorry, but there was still not a singer I’ve ever heard that could touch it. It far exceeded even the show itself. Missing You was spectacular. If I had not have seen him rehearsing it live, I would have sworn the version in the show was taped.

I was chatting with the guy running the mixing board. He was telling me he had been in the business for 30+ years (and he looked it) and had worked on many Journey shows during that time. He agreed that he had never witnessed a voice sounding that good.

It wasn’t as high as say Evolution or Escape, etc. But for my money, it was far better. I think his voice did wear down over the tour, but I can understand that.

Just as Ehwmatt stated, I just do not believe that kind of ability can fall away completely. He would have to take an arrow to the throat from a crossbow, and even then I think he’d manage.

I can’t imagine Uncle Joe and Steve Lukather and whoever else stating that he can still sing just to prop him up. Makes no sense.

Maybe this lies within Steve Perry himself. He made comments that he didn’t feel he could sing to his expectations. Well, maybe he just needs to adjust that. I mean, if he doesn’t want to do it anymore, fine, enjoy the life. God speed. But if he is staying away because he feels he does not have enough to offer, I hope he rethinks it.

Thank you so much for that post Memorex.

I have an opinion regarding the subject you touched on in you last paragraph.

Most of the public messageboards with any input regarding Steve Perry are Journey boards. That's because the fans of the band after they decided to try it without Steve in 1997 wouldn't allow a public board dedicated to Steve Perry to exist. They were turned into Perry(and Perry fan) bashing, trashing, and smearing boards. Therefore most of the fan feedback Steve has had since then has been negative about him.

Augeri was heralded as being better than Perry because he could still hit notes that Perry couldn't. "Who's Perry?" "Who needs Perry?" "Perry can't hit the high notes anymore.""If Perry was singing they'd have to lower the songs." "The songs wouldn't sound right if they had to move them down a step."

Now I'm reading the same bullshit about Arnel.

And the criticisms of what people think his voice would sound like aren't all of it. He's been called every demeaning and debasing name a man can be called on this and other boards short of thief, rapist or murderer.

Steve's fanbase is mostly associated with the Journey fanbase. Why would he feel confident that anything he were to do now would be accepted?

I think the fans on this, the old VH1, and the old BT have no one but themselves to thank for Steve's unwillingness to jump back into the fray.

Well i think hes doing the right thing. Theres one thing NO ONE has ever accused Perry of (not even herbie )
and thats being STUPID. He left on top with Journey as it should be. His legacy deserves nothing less than to
be remembered as the awesome vocalist he was. I just listened to "only the Young" from his solo tour.
its not the way I will remember him. hes no dummy.
