RED 13: Like it or Hate it?

Found my Red 13 disk and, with the exception of feeling like Augeri's vocals were the weak link, I remember really digging "I can breathe". I thought Neal was really trying to stretch himself as an artist here and I admired him for it.

If you like the disk, name a favorite track and why.

I think if Arnel was not just the singer, but allowed to contribute on the the vocal melodies on tracks like I can Breathe and Walking Away from The Edge, it would have been something to keep on the iPod. Jon needs to loosen the creative reigns a bit and allow a third writer in the mix I think. It's what's missing from their material since Perry's been gone.

I personally love it. There's some great, fiery, axe work on there by Schon and the lyrics are strong, in my opinion. The only qualms I have with it are the production and the fact that they should've just waited and included those tunes on an entire album.

i had ordered some journey swag and red 13 was included as a freebie, i hadn't heard arrival yet and thought- wow, journey has really changd :lol:

Complete and utter shit. Embarrassing part of the catalog. I was also pissed they deviated from the one word titles.

State of Grace and Walking Away From The Edge were pretty cool. Still listen to them when I can. I really like the "somber" Journey ballads like Walking Away From The Edge (Winds of March, Mother Father, Send Her My Love, Patiently kinda vein). I don't remember the production being THAT bad, I'll have to go take a listen. Certainly can't be worse than Generations

"State of Grace" is a flat-out rocker, not a power ballad. "Walking Away From the Edge" is a power ballad.

of course I loved Red 13.

I immensely dig anything that's a bit different, and for Journey, Red 13 was quite a bit different.

"State of Grace" is one of my favorite Journey tracks.

Speaking of SoG, I was with one of my buddies a few weeks ago. He needed a lift to McDonald's, so we got ourselves some McChickens and sat in the parking lot, pigging out and listening to tunes. He was all like, "Hey man, play me some of your epic progadelic shit," and I just hit "shuffle" and flicked through a few songs, and we started listening to SoG.... He was bugging out, his eyes going all twitchy during the intro, with the all the drums going crazy and the spacey keys/guitar threading through it all... and he finally said "Dude, play me some normal music, like human beings listen to..." The way he said it, as Deen was going nuts in the background, was just really funny....

Look Into The Future was the only one that I would count as "Journey" collectively naming with more than one word. I would bet that Perry mandated the titles ROR and TBF. Pure speculation, though.

Anyone that says that Red 13 is crap is an idiot! The Time was an awesome track1 I also liked Red13/State of grace.. The last 2 were the weak links.. I loved how Augeri sang the Time.. Also,Generations was not crap..If Neal,Jon and Ross would have kept their yappers shut the album would have been great..Its like they had 3-4 quality songs and rushed the rest..

I felt physically sick when I heard Neal, Cain, and Valory pretending to be Perry! It was a complete embarrassment to the Journey name. I couldn't think of a higher level of disrespect to the Journey name then letting "The Three Stooges" sing lead, and attaching the name Journey to the recording...Simply unacceptable!

My standards are actually kind of high, and yeah alot of Journey hardcores are surprised when I rank Generations as one of my favorites, but I reckon I look for some slightly different things in my music than most other people do. :wink:

That said, my top three are the self-titled debut, Escape, and Frontiers.
