OT: Friends/Family That Just Don't "Get It"

Postby T-Bone » Mon Mar 24, 2008 3:40 am

How many of you have friends or family that just don't 'Get It" when it comes to your style of music?

I went to see my friend Joe's band Van Halen Army last night. They're a Roth-era Tribute to Van Halen.

Videos available HERE

I snapped tons of pics for them so they could add them to their website... This morning, I was editing pics and came to one where my fiance says "gross". I gave her a funny look and asked why the hell that was gross. She had some long drawn out reason why she thought so and I had to explain to her why the lead singer was in that get-up. It's a TRIBUTE!!!! She still didn't "get it" so I started showing her old VH videos... and she still had an opinion, even though it was based on absolutely NOTHING (she does that alot). Then she recognized a song (Jump) and said, "They did that?" Duh.....

We then got on the subject of another friend that just joined the band Hairball. Chainsaw Caine retired and the lead singer from Gemini, Kris Vox, took his place. I showed her a pic of Kris in his Dee Snider (Stay Hungry era) outfit (PICS) and she had nothing nice to say about it. Again, I went to showing her the videos from that era and had to explain the TRIBUTE thing....

Needless to say, she'll never understand because she never saw the videos back in the day and didn't know the music at that time...

Anyone else have family or friends that just don't "get it" when it comes to your style of music?

I have a friend that claims that Steve Perry is "average."

At MY OWN BIRTHDAY PARTY some bitch unplugged the stereo because "my music taste is horrible." Well, bitch, let the world see your natural hair color and what you look like without that lipring and "DEAD KENNEDYS" shirt that looks like it hasn't been washed in ten years, and then we'll talk about horrible taste....

What's so horrible about Journey, Van Halen, Rush, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, Foreigner, Zeppelin, Springsteen?! I even played just "the hits!" One guy there said it was the best party he had ever been to, "because this is the first party EVER that has played YES!"

Actually, I spar with a LOT of my friends over music... half are all artsy-fartsy indie, and the other half are mainstreamers... luckily I have quite a few in both camps that either like or respect Journey...

I can only play Steve Perry when my co-worker goes to lunch. She says he's just yelling.
She will let me play 70's music all day though and likes the Eagles new music. I have to compromise a little, I will not play her waltzes.

Yeah..what gets me is that a lot of people just don't get what is the big deal about 'music' unreal.

Music not only helped me many times in my life..but I can place where I was and what I was doing when I hear a certain song.

I could make list upon list of songs that specifically helped me out at certain times of my life. I seriously felt that without them to lift me up..push me through..push me to my dreams..that I would not have done what I did.

I have givin up trying to convince people..I don't give a shit anymore..I get it..most don't..guess that's why I hang here..because after all the bullshit.. :P people here understand about the music..a song.

God knows how many times i've tried too explain to friends that Steve Perry is an incredible singer, one of the best voices ever.

and i'm left with answers like "not as good as Celine Dion" or "Pete Docherty is better"

DUDE for real. I can't talk music with most of my friends for fear of being thrown into either an over-analytical debate where using my friends' logic, that Modest Mouse or Pavement is superior to Journey... OR, conversely, being thrown into a superficial debate where age of music and chart success dictate how good songs are.

Here there are more people that really understand the nuts and bolts of music, know WHY they like what they do, and are always eager to share songs that have touched them, with others. Not only have I learned alot about melodic rock music, but many other styles, from users on MR.

Celine Dion is a great singer, actually.

But yeah, just the other night, I was in a battle with two snarky friends of mine, that contended that singers like Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), the guy from Gogol Bordello, the guy from Fall Out Boy, and so on, are superior to Perry.

When I got home from Vegas my wife came at me with " don't you think thats enough with this "Journey stuff? It has been since I've known you." After I calmed myself and put the knife down, I replied " It's only gonna get worse. You wouldn't understand. Live with it because you will go before Journey does."

THAT guy has an AMAZING voice, and actually writes some great pop rock songs...It will be interesting to see if he can (and matures enough to want to) break free from the "fall out boy' thing...the guy that plays bass in that band is the WORST bass player, at least live...I have to believe most of their albums are studio 'magic'....again, the singer is really fuckin' good, and some great songs on all three of their major releases.

Steve has more respect and is more well-known that you think.

A few years back, I was working out at a Gold's Gym. There were these four massive guys with tree-trunk biceps, wearing bandanas and "'hood" attire. Yes, they were all African-American.

So "Faithfully" starts playing on the gym radio.

"Man, that Steve Perry is incredible."
"The best voice I ever heard, that motherfucker."
"You damn straight."

You get the idea. These guys spent the next ten minutes talking about how amazing Perry was/is.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Well, in this instance, and probably others, I'm the odd ball. I suffer from acute musical myopia. My musical window is very narrow. I like a lot of old classic rock bands but if you start my car, you'll either be listening to Journey, VH or Boston. And the last couple of years it's been predominately Journey. I have a few friends that like them, but most people look at me like I'm an alien. If you see me at work with my ipod on, you can pretty much guess that I'm either listening to the '81 Houston Escape show or I've been listening to a lot of TBF lately. Maybe next month I'll start digging into the pre Perry stuff, who knows? I've never been this hooked on one band for so long.

But yeah, to answer the question, almost nobody gets me when it comes to the music I listen to, and I don't get them.

I didn't have to throw her out, she left on her own accord. A few minutes later I had a private discussion with her as Hardline was blaring in the background...

Me: So, why is my taste so "horrible?"

Her: It just is. So much mainstream classic rock SHIT. Listen to some real music for once.

Me: Oh, damn man... wow.... what's your least favorite band ever? Just wondering.

Her: Poison.... *rant about Poison being shitty*

Ten minutes later I flicked my iPod over to Poison's greatest hits and started blasting "Nothin' But A Good Time."

Needless to say, she was out the door before the guitar solo. 8)
