The first time I cried in about 20 years was when I had to put my German shepherd down a few years ago.

We put one of our Cocker Spaniels down about a year ago. We held it together pretty well until we got home. Poured ourselves a drink, made a toast to her - and both completely lost it. I've never seen my husband cry like that. It's a hard thing, especially when they don't go 'naturally', even though you know you're doing the right thing - they're family.

I had my beloved shepherd/retriever/god-knows-what-else mix put down two months ago today. That dog was my baby. It was definitely time, but it was so difficult. I took him in and stayed with him through the entire procedure. I miss that dog every day.
