Agreed. That will be their FINAL BIG, BIG, BIG paycheck. When Perry returns, IF he returns, they will sell out stadiums again for one last tour. Maybe two nights in these size arena's these two if it's a fall tour.

That's sad but it sounds like a lot of us are thinking the same way. Between Perry spitting up blood after concerts and Augeri wrecking his voice, I'm reminded that those are punishing tunes done over the long haul.

Yep.
Just the way they write/p1ay/record music.

Augeri even strugg1ed trying to sing his origina1s 1ive such as HP, Be1ieve FITH, TPIYH OOHW if you check the concerts inc1uding Irvine on the Generations tour.

Arnel's got another 6 to 8 years of the voice he has now, if he's worked like Perry and Augeri were.

If they take it easy, he could go longer.

Touring for 9 months out of the year will kill any singer.

I think it would be wise for the guys to do a little less, especially if they catch a new wave, ride it for a while and then semi-retire

It'll kill any singer singing in that range, that's for sure. 4-5 nights a week for 9 months? Insane.

But, isn't that was Metal bands in the 80's routinely did? I know Maiden & Priest used to play 200+ dates a year when they toured.

I think considering their age we're seeing the Final Chapter of Journey and AP is gonna be the last and final Front Man. And if this is the Final Chapter I don't wanna miss it!

After Pineda look for Journey to hook up with Sammy Hagar, followed by Michael Jackson. Whitney Houston will follow Jacko, Morris Day will follow Whitney and the books will be closed on the band with Meatloaf at the helm.

I think those metal singers, a few of them anyway, found a spot in thier voices where they could scratch and growl and "scream" without putting too much strain on their chords. Hell, Sammy Hagar sang some high notes and he still sounds pretty good.

The way Steve Perry sang was balls out, guts and glory that's why (I think) we feel so much from him and we get that emotion, I don't ever remember thinking "wow, Sammy Hagar can really sing", only "wow, Sammy Hagar can hit some notes".

Know what I mean?

I am convinced that if things go wrong with Arnel, who is incredible by the way, they will find a new singer.

Just catching up on some live stuff with Arnel, and I think his voice suits Journey much better than Soto's or even Augeri's, with all due respect. The band is now at it's best since Perry, in my opinion.

Looking forward to the album! 8)

I feel the exact opposite. I feel like they're at their weakest.

Again, I am NOT bashing Arnel...the man has talent. But, based on the clips I've seen/heard, he's NOT "the man" by any stretch. (Opinion ahead): He oversings, enunciates poorly & is just boring. I get nothing from his performances at all.

In his prime, Augeri was/is 10x better for Journey than Arnel. Soto would have been fantastic for a new direction (ala Van Halen w/ Hagar) and handled the classics admirably and with vigor.

Arnel, again, sounds like a dude singing karaoke (singing it well, but karaoke nontheless).

I'll reserve final judgement for when I hear the new album. But, if its no better than his versions of the classics, I have no more reason to follow Journey. I'm always one of the first one's I know to champion the "replacement" singer...I have been fans of Augeri (Journey), Ripper (Priest), Hagar (Van Halen), Hansen (Foreigner), Burtnick (Styx) & others who have stepped into enormous shoes becuase when they joined their respective bands, they nailed it. They had the voices, the looks, the personas, the passion...and IMO, so far Arnel is not nailing it.

First off, I respect your oppinion totally.

I partially agree with you about the performance aspect of things, but I think it may be down to lack of experience? There's a great difference between being in a cover band in the Phillipines and being in the actual band itself. Maybe he needs some time to settle into the role? One thing he isn't, in my opinion, is boring though. He holds my visual interest when I see him perform but you can tell he is a bit "diamond in the rough". But I think that can be fixed as long as he has some basic charisma.

The bad enunciation is a matter of training his English I suppose, as the oversinging may be a combination of the pretty flamboyant over-the-top style of many Asian rock singers (am thinking of Japanese rock bands I've seen) and a very strong urge to prove himself. Again, things that can be fixed.

But of course, if you don't see him as having any basic personal charisma, then I can understand why you think the band is weak at the moment.

I myself thinks he has way more charisma than Augeri who in that department didn't do much for me. Soto is a much harder act to follow in that department though, to say nothing of Perry. But Arnel's voice blows both Soto and Augeri away in a Journey context, IMO.

I agree that the album will be the true test of Arnel's strength, but so far I see promise.

Here we go, Arnel isn't even 5 nights in yet, and people are already calling for his replacement. God damn. If there would be a singer after Arnel, it's going to be Steve Perry, bank on it, and I HIGHLY doubt that one..by the time the thought of that happens, they'll all be pushing 70!

Nah. If he does. As fate would have it, it would only be after all of the guys are in their 70s, have tuned down 3 steps, and just play chords over tracks.

Not in the least. I saw him w/ Journey twice and I thought he was perfect (1998 & 1999)...great stage moves, great voice...audience was eating out of his hand. He played the Journey stage like he was born to do it when I saw him. The recordings he did with the band are fantastic as well. The touring schedule wrecked him.

but I think it may be down to lack of experience? There's a great difference between being in a cover band in the Phillipines and being in the actual band itself.

Very true...maybe they should have given him a little longer to settle in before taking him out on the road?

I'm not calling for his replacement. I am obviously in the minority as far as my opinion. I just think he's a little too green at this stage to be in the position he's in.

Maybe he needs some time to settle into the role?

Very possible and I wish him & the band all the success in the world! I hope the album is good.
