Site Outage.

Postby Rick » Sun Apr 06, 2008 10:13 am

In case you're wondering why MR has been down, it's the result of a massive computer failure in Florida where this sites server is hosted. Andrew has a stand alone computer there that hosts MR, so simply switching to another site host isn't possible.

There has been a huge expenditure to repair the issues to get MR running again, and the costs are staggering. This comes right out of Andrews pocket.

If you're so inclined to help the Wombat, which I hope you are, then visit the Image button on the front page.

Every contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Andrew never lets us down, so let's not let him down.

Give if you can, and give what you can.

Thank you so much.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I'll have to see what I can do. I don't have a credit card or a PayPal account. I'll have to look into what else I can do.

Thanks folks. I would normally get an e-mail notifiucation where I can reply and thank everyone individually, but as my e-mail is still down  I will thank everyone collectively here.

This is much appreciated and once this shit gets sorted, this forum (and site) will be lighning fast and bullet-proof.

Andrew probably already know's this but I'm throwin' it out there for anyone that doesn't.

Don't keep any significant amount as a balance in Paypal. Move it out regularly. They can lock your account for any reason at all. I've seen instances where' they've locked accounts with over $10,000 in it.

Also, if you accept Paypal in ebay, amounts over $100 will be AUTOMATICALLY LOCKED for 21 days. Read up on what's happening.

They're getting very aggressive in making interest off OUR money.

What Stone Cold meant to say was that if you have a large amount in PayPal, you'd be better served donating it to Andrew. ;)

Folks - it has been a long weekend, and a distruptive month or so with all these outages. Each time I have said this, something else has gone wrong, but as of right now, I'm back at 100% and I truly believe there will be no more outages.

I'm still investigating any further ways of upgrading to even faster performance, but timing out should now be gone.

Thank you for your patience and for those who could afford to make a donation to the site - very much appreciated.

Take care,
Andrew.

I would be interested to know myself if this is true -- it would probably end my use of PayPal altogether as I just uploaded a buttload of stuff for auction last night (I usually don't sell). I learned firsthand how they make money, though, when I sold my Gibson Robot Guitar. Once I'd received the money, I was notified that I had to upgrade to a PayPal Premier Account (I think it was called "Premier"). It said upgrading was free, but didn't tell me that they skim a fat chunk off of the top of any incoming money -- just a short blurb with two options, ACCEPT or DECLINE. I really had no choice if I wanted that almost $3,000, but I should have opened up a new window and researched the terms of the Premier accounts.

Needless to say when I saw them take over $70 out of my payment, I was pissed and called them. The lady said, "This is how we make money -- we can't do everything for free." She was nice, but not apologetic for any misunderstandings at all. I let her know that I felt the tactic was deceptive. For what it's worth, users can ONE TIME ONLY turn a Premier Account back into a standard account, but you are limited to $300 incoming per month if you do.

I'm sure they get interest off of any balance as well, just like any bank, but would seriously be surprised if they held the money like this -- the customers they lost for doing so surely would outweigh any benefits they would reap. If you can find info on this, let me know.

This $100 rule is for new seller's or people with bad ratings who use paypal. There is a criteria they have for those whose money they hold. Established sellers don't fall into this rule.

Also, wanted to add, having paypal as an ebay seller, if you are going to sell regularly is a good idea. It broadens your market appeal because it is quick, easy, safe and secure. Buyers want to use it for their protection.
