One addition to my previous list:

Terri Nunn - maybe not technically "rock", but a very powerful voice...

My top five:

1. Ann Wilson
2. Pat Benetar
3. Grace Slick
4. Janis Joplin
5. Stevie Nicks

No prizes for guessing my favourite - but the best female singer in a live setting i ever heard was Ann Wilson - unbelievable range and power......

Others would be Robin Beck, Karen Carpenter, Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion.

She stills sound incredible!!! I'd also like to give kudos to her overlooked sister, Nancy. That lady has a hell of a voice in her own right! She has always just been in the vocal shadows of her sister. Of course Ann has nothing on her in the guitar department!

So could Martina McBride, that gal's got a stunning voice.

My favorite female singers are pretty much the equivalents of my favorite male singers. :)

Pat Benatar (Steve Perry)
Ann Wilson (Eric Martin)
Amanda Marshall (JSS)

Really like Sass Jordan and Amy Lee's voices too.

Come on Deb...Benatar is the equivalent of Perry? I love Pat Benatar but she's not close to Ann Wilson, in terms of power and range (which is what Perry was known for)!

I love Ann Wilson's voice and I think she's got a lot of power and soul like EM does, but I also think Pat Benatar has tons of power and range and has that same operatic quality Perry does.

And Amanda Marshall is a female equivalent of JSS. Tremendously soulful singer, great voice and nowhere near as well known yet as she should be. :) Elton John and Jon Bon Jovi really like her though.

That's a good one Moonie. Not really into country, but most of Martina McBride's songs do that to me, she packs so much emotion into her songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDm03Foq2T0

You haven't listened to much of her deeper album cuts then. The only person that can even come CLOSE to her range of octaves is Mariah Carey. Especially some of her latter day stuff where her voice has matured.

Pat Benatar can flat DEAL.

Better than Wilson in just about every phase.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Eva Cassidy on here. Not your conventional 'rock' artist by any means, but she was a phenomenal vocalist. Would've been nice to see how far she could've gone in the rock genre. BTW, these are taken from one of the best live albums you'll ever hear.

Ah, Canseco can drum up fat jokes unconsciously.

It's just what he does.
