Steve Smith Q&A

Postby Art Vandelay » Mon Apr 07, 2008 12:47 am

Here's a nice Q&A from Steve Smith's website.

VERY technical, but he does talk about his playing on TBF and the Frontiers title track.

He also talks about swing pulse, which some were asking about in another SS thread a while back.

Enjoy.

I'd love to learn how to play drums...

...and if there was one man I'd want to teach me, it would be Steve Smith. My favorite drummers are Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, and Gavin Harrison... but Smith has such superior groove and feel, and is quite versatile.

May he rest well, Jeff Porcaro is another man who could command the sticks like a true artist.

Love Portnoy and Peart. Thomas Lang is certainly worth checking out

Jeff was amazing. Sad loss there.

Prog - what's your thoughts on Aynsley Dunbar, since he was behind the kit during Journey's progressive days? I think you'd have to judge on the first three albums, though. Infinity doesn't do him justice.

Terry Bozzio could be in that group as well...IMHO...

Dunbar was absolutely seamless, dude. Not a "precise" vibe like one would get from Smitty and Porcaro, but I loved his swooping, thundering feel. I especially love his work on "Kohoutek," that song was way ahead of its time, it was Tool and Porcupine Tree twenty years earlier.

Nooooooooo! That will teach me to not pay attention! Oh well, wondered why I hadn't heard about the gig before and was away from home this time last year so missed you then too.
Best of luck with your current and future projects. :D
