I don't know if he lipped or not, but I do know that the Storm blew him off the stage when I saw them. Chalfant and Rolie were great together. :D

I don't know if Joe lipped or not but when I seen them in Indy last go around, he had help on the high parts. It may have been Viv and the rest covering his ass, but he had lots of help on the high parts.

I don't consider other band members helping out as lipping. I call that a vocally strong band. I get what you're saying though.

Exactly. There may be enhancements to the band's sound and samples and triggered backing vocals or whatever...but I don't buy the lead vocal BS at all. Joe's live....too easy to tell!

Def LEppard

Postby Indyjoe » Fri Apr 18, 2008 10:01 am

I personally have never been disappointed by Def Leppard live going back seeing them first in 1983. I will be seeing them the 26th, 27th and 30th and I don't anticipate being disappointed then either. :D

Vivian, Phil and Sav all have great voices and do a fantastic job of backing vocals.

I have always loved Joe's singing and still do!!

DEF LEPPARD ROCKS!!

When I saw them after Journey, the band sounded excellent, but it was very obvious that the lead vocals were the weak link in the chain, and really not a good follow-up to an incredible performance by JSS. At one point during "Love Bites", I walked out into the hall, and it was obvious how many effects they had surrounding Joe Elliott's voice to prop him up. He was hitting the notes, but had no power at all, and sounded deep inside a well. It sounded to me like someone singing falsetto at barely above speaking volume, as if you are singing a song to a friend in the same room with you.

All in all, it really made me no difference. If that's what it takes to see Def Leppard live, then so be it. I don't want them to stay home just because they aren't 100%. If anything, that band is a great example of a group that troops on in the face of less than perfect circumstances. A one-armed drummer, a bass player with Bell's Palsy, and a singer that can't sing anymore... My hat's off to them.

Yep- I saw em in 1980...that's NINETEEN AND EIGHTY, folks! And I'm pretty sure there was no "lipping' back then...of course to pull that off in 1980, they'd have had to use a record! :D

..and not to burst anyone's bubble- but ALL of these fuckers use prerecorded backing vocals...ALL OF EM, I say...

Another angry journey fan trying to create hate among def leppard fans. It must really hurt.

I've got probably one of the biggest live video recording archives of def leppard anywhere, somewhere over 200 shows from 79 to 2008. Im part of a private def leppard collectors group that has upwards of over 700 audio recordings of def leppard and over 200 video. That includes IEM Feeds/Ald and mixed snd brd feeds as well as single track, multi track recordings of each band member live. etc etc...

if any of them were not singing live we would know.

even rick savage does his bass synth parts live while playing his bass guitar.

yes there are various triggers throughout the show, but all members are singing live.

if they were not singing live, dont ya think joe would sound perfect every night.....???

as for deano, he knows what subjects to stay away from, only ones he can prove.....why would he make himself look bad.

as for the canada slams, canada is def leppards biggest market per capita. They can do a sold out tour coast to coast. When was the last time journey played Canada, oh...the casino wasnt it? to under 4000 people.....free tickets

but thanks to def leppard letting them open their show... Journey got to do at least one major tour since 1986.

Seriously...that lowers the sympathy factor down to almost nil for me. I understand your voice changes as you get older, which isn't always condusive to hard rock vocals, but for fuck's sake at least take care of your voice if you're going to be singing for a living.

If you're referring to myself who started this thread. You couldn't be more wrong. Actually, I'm a bigger fan of Leppard than Journey. The whole point of the thread was to point out that they do sing live and actually cancel shows when they can't perform rather than lip and rake in the hard earned cash of their fans.
BTW. The Detroit shows been rescheduled for Sat. Aug. 23rd 7pm.

I Hate to break it to you Andrew, but I saw them live (Front row) with Journey and counted 7 times where Joe lipped! All of these instances happened right after a song would finish, and he would say something to the audience. No sound would come out. They had to bring the levels back up on his mic, and it couldn't have been more obvious. I was pissed hearing that. I don't think many other people there noticed, but as a fan I was SERIOUSLY let down!

I did go see them again later that year with Journey, and that time I didn't catch him once. I did notice that his vocals sounded a little rougher that show also.

As far as backing vocals go.....If any of you think they don't pipe in additional pre-recorded tracks.....I've got some ocean-front property for sale in Arizona! They are for the most part all great singers, but even in their heyday they used backing tracks. Just like Journey did in the later Perry years. Listen to any of the live concert footage with Randy Jackson, and your hearing actual backing vocals from the ROR album! That's about 20 Steve Perry's on stage at the same time. He's good.....but not THAT good!

Prove it, thats all i can say

and as for bringing a Mic back up, if they are playing to a click track..the audio board is probably programmed to kill the sound after the sequence has played. Most boards are automated these days and programming the mix like that isnt unheard of.

don't confuse programming a live mix with pre recorded vocals.

I have an audio background in live broadcast television on automated audio consoles. Once a segment or in this case a song is over it's common to kill or mute the Mic or mix. In this case the Mic was probably muted in between songs in case joe yelled at the techs or had to cough etc etc. it's easliy explainable.

ill be waiting for your proof. start syncing those shows up with the CD's
