richrath to speedwagon was what schon is to journey.he put that hard vibe into the music and gave it that aggression and passion the music needs.

I got into REO "late", about 1987.

I belonged to the Columbia CD Club (remember THOSE?) and I erroneously was given "The Hits" in my package of CDs.

Turned on the first track "I Don't Want To Lose You" (if I remember correctly) and loved it immediately. Thought hmmm....maybe the other songs are good....and I was hooked. Did not see them until the REO/STYX/Journey tour.

Kevin's voice has changed over the years - but I love his phrasing and geeze, can those guys still rock.

Kevin's newsletters are fun, too. Talk about a band that keeps you up-to-date on what is happening.

Richrath leaving didn't really hit me all that much, although I understand it had REO fans arguing for years!

He can't be straight... he just can't be.

He looks, talks, and acts like a prototypical flaming gay.

He can't be straight... he just can't be.

I've always thought he had a great voice....hopefully I can see him live before he retires...REO's first GH record is a mainstay...

'Back On The Road Again' is REO's best song ever.
Not only because it rocks pretty hard, but because Cronin does not sing it.
I will say though that High Infidelity was a good album, but probably because Richrath just scorched it. And I remember a video for 'One Lonely Night' that was kinda cool.

Yup, probably my favorite REO cd. Heavy Richrath through the whole thing. Great stuff. :D

First serious post of the thread:

REO Speedwagon is either a major hit or a major miss for me. Some of their songs leave me feeling limp-wristed and lame, while others are turbo-charged standards of rock and roll. I like 'em overall though, and sometimes I actually dig Cronin's voice.

....Sometimes.

Prog. Ever heard the "Nine Lives" cd? NOTHING limpwristed about that. Richrath wrote most of it. Great stuff. :D

Hittin' the bottle a bit early, huh SJ?

Kevin Cronin has got probably THE worst voice in classic rock. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.
He was NEVER good. I think bands just tour with REO so that the fans will go "Man, that band blew REO away".

Aunt Cronin used to rock his socks off. His voice was unique, much more manly than it is now days. Now he can only sing soft with a limited range. Actually it's fairly embarrassing to be honest.

Rocking songs I grew up listening to:

Riding the storm out
Back on the road again
Time for me to fly
Roll with the changes

wow..that's a hot 4 track right there. ;)

It has changed. It's like he had voice lessons or something - it's hard to explain. Geeze, do all guys' voice drop twice in their lives?

Tina Fish is one of the best albums cut by cut ever made. You get what you play for rocks all the way through as well. It is too bad Richrath was jesttisoned but I think it was due to his alcohol problems. Those 2 worked well together although they got softer and more commercial with every album. It seemed they were trying to duplicate the success of Hi Infidelity rather than write music from the heart. I guess it is about the Benjamins but they were much better before all the lovey dovey routine.

As for Cronin, you can hate on him but he probably had more hot women than and 20 people on this board, He is a health freak and a bit quirky but after all he is a musician. The stories are tired and he goes on and on in concert but they pack hit after hit in the set. Most bands would kill to make a fraction of the great songs REO has.

As for his voice, he has been singing for almost 35 years. I would guess anyone's voice would change after 20 years of 200 shows a year on the road.

This band got me into music fully and as many other folks probably do, I have used music as my refuge for years. My way to relax and enjoy! I guess I am a doe hard supporter since I feel they walked me into this passion after hearing Ridin the STorm out in my brother's custom van on the way to the motorcycle races many, many years ago. MOving to CRonin was the best thing this band did and probably why they ever made a real name and became a band with staying power!

Every show I have ever been to even the latest in Baltimore with Z Z TOP, the crowd reacted to every song (except the oldies like golden country) anyone notice the new era yuppies who newver heard an REO song before Hi Infidelity? LOL! Just like Motley when I saw them, no one knew anything from the early years, same with Def Leppard when the ripped into HIgh & Dry, their best album effort ever!
Bottom line fudgepacker or not, Cronin carried this band to a new level!
