<Rant Mode On>

I'm sure many of you with jobs have 1 or 2 coworkers that really know how to play the system in some way or another. Most of the time, it involves absences.

I work with 2 chicks that REALLY know how to play the absences game as well as a guy that has been on Workmans comp most of his adult working life, including almost every job he's ever had.

What I'd like to know, is why the system allows this, or cannot do anything about it?

The girl that's on my team, had over 25 absences last year. Policy allows 6, and the 7th is termination. The funny thing is, she's learned how to use her child as leverage and they cannot question her or do anything about it. Her daughter had leukimia about 2 years ago, but has since had a good recovery. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and I feel bad for her. Her mom, as a parent, should never have to go through that either, but she has since learned to use that excuse for any days she wants off. We work a 5 week rolling schedule along with 4 other teams. It involves working 2 weekends, (one days, one nights) and also having 3 off. One of them is a 7 day break and it's all built in.

Anyway... Whenever the weekend shifts come up, her daughter miraculously ends up sick (because of the leukimia) and she needs to go home, and will miss the rest of the weekend. The odd thing is, she won't bring her to the doctor because she just "keeps an eye on her at home". Supervision cannot/will not ask her for a doctors note due to some legal bullshit involving FMLA or something. It's obvious to all of us on the team, as well as the entire force, that if you go back and TREND her absences, they'll all show up on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. This in turn causes the team to work shorthanded, unless someone with the day off answers the phone and comes in to help.

Other absences include certain Holidays where our team would have to work due to the schedule working out that way. She'll realize we're working, make the mistake of saying something to the effect of having plans for the holiday or wanting to spend time with her kids, (Halloween, Thanksiving, Easter, etc...) but having to work. Then, the day or night before that day, she'll get a phone call at work from home, and then within 30 minutes, she's out the door and also missing the next day. How much more obvious can it be? She missed this entire weekend AGAIN, due to a "sick child", but was seen out and about with the new boyfriend on Saturday.... right outside the movie theater  Of course we had to work short handed....

_________

Second girl... Not on my team, but many of us have been forced to cover her shifts before, and It pisses me off. She's another one with the Single Mom life and does nothing but BITCH constantly about the guy/guys in her life (she's a virtual petri dish) and not having someone to watch her kid when she wants to go out and party. Her mother refuses to watch her kid every weekend, and it pisses her off to no end.

She will miss almost every weekend as well with some sort of excuse or another. The "Sick Child" or Daycare excuse is a great one, because work cannot do anything because of it for some reason... She's another one who had over 10-15 absences last year, and she only started in July/August. She's been seen at the bars tanked off her ass MANY times when she called in sick to work.

_________

The last guy, is constantly hurt in some way, and of course, it happens at work, but with no witnessess. Last year, he aparently fell down, and while falling, hurt his elbow. He spend the next 6 months on light duty, but getting full pay. He had to go to 3 different doctors before one finally said that there could be something wrong with his elbow. The work doctor as well as his regular doctor told him that there was nothing wrong and a little rehab would work the bruise back out. Not good enough for him... He wanted off work. This same guy was on Workmans Comp at the last 3-4 jobs he was at as well. See a pattern here? He was once married and his wife at the time had to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet because his workmans comp wasn't covering the bills. She eventually left him because she was sick of his laziness. He'll do anything to get out of work, whether at work, or at home. As far as the "work related" injury goes, he's been seen by many of us off the job, and for some reason, his arm worked just fine to carry groceries out the door at the store, pick up his daughter and do other things, but when at work, he wears a protective brace and canot lift more than 2 pounds...

Why the FUCK can't a workplace do something about people like this? What they really need to do is hire a Private Investigator and follow these certain problematic people and get the goods on them, and then just fire their asses. In the long run, it would save the company money because they have to pay others OVERTIME to fill these spots in the roster, while STILL paying the jackass who called in sick, or cannot work due to injuries, not to mention their healthcare insurance costs. Our Insurance went up the last 2 years due to too many claims.

</Rant Mode Off>

<Rant Mode Reinstated>

The girl that's on my team (The first one mentioned above), just threw herself under the bus... Hopefully it pans out to where they ixnay her. She called in sick on Tuesday night of this week, and somehow didn't need a doctors note again. Anyway, that put her at Low Hours for the pay period. There are overtime shifts to fill over the weekend as well as early next week. Since she was low hours, she got nailed for Sunday and Monday nights, and they lead into our regular Tues-Thurs night shifts, so she'll have 5 in a row   She was wimpering about getting them because she had "plans" this weekend. So... I ended up rotating up from the Main Gate at about 1:30am and notice she's sitting in the downstairs office with the 2 EMT's on our team... WTF NOW?!?!?

Aparently, while at the Main Gate, she twisted her knee, but didn't report it until 2 hours later.... Guess what... That would put it in the timeframe that I was with her at that post... So I had to write a report  Usually that sucks, but I got to be the bus driver this time

I assumed my post at the front gate at approx 10pm tonight. There's usually 2 people posted there, and I, unfortunately, got stuck with her. When I got there, She was walking around outside and dealing with a vehicle that wanted to get in. She was walking just fine. Over the next 1.5 hours, she was up and about, sitting on her ass, Texting like mad on her new cell phone, up and about, sitting on her ass, etc... and NOT ONE WORD about hurting, and not ONE TIME did I see her have an incident where she would get hurt. At appx 23:30, she went outside, got in the Jeep, and rotated up to her next post at the main building. She didn't limp, fall or do anything that would make one think she got hurt. About 01:00, she made a comment to a supervisor that she had hurt her knee while at the Main Gate. That started the downward spiral...

So... I was approached by supervision, to write a report and take special care to note the TIME I was there with her, and what I DID NOT see happen, or DID NOT hear her mention. I have a funny feeling that supervision is going to try and make this one stick, but it's management that continues to ignore the problem.

With a knee injury, it's immediately to the Hospital for an examination. Either she has to be taken by Management, but since they live over 20 miles away, they allowed her to drive herself, but she had to meet someone from management there. Mind you that they're already NOT HAPPY because it's 2am  When she found out she had to go to the Hospital, she tried to back pedal and say she'd be fine, but supervision was on a roll, and they "insisted" she go 8)

On the down side, now the rest of us will have to fill her overtime shifts

I'm hoping that they'll run with this one, but I have a funny feeling they'll sweep it under the rug as usual

T-Bone, welcome to my nightmare....ten percent of my office staff have been on workman's comp just in the last three to four months. One came back just a few months ago but the others are still out. Obviously they knew they were going to pull this crap before hand because they got that special insurance so if they are out and can't work, the company pays their bills, house and car payments. They go out on workman's comp all the time. When I found out about the special bill paying insurances, I had to stop and ask myself how much are these people really paying for their houses, cars, and international vacations paid with plastic.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel (I hope). California is starting to get really tough on scrubs like these. It's now a felony if they're caught sponging off the system like they are.

Workers Comp is a big problem here in Louisiana as well...

However, there's a new company that is working on improving things by bringing together the employer, doctors, and insurance companies to manage the workers and claims together

Yes... a little communication between Doctors and Work would be nice, but then it treads into Confidentiality territory.

It could end up being a pretty slippery slope

Even with a doctors note, which only costs a $10 copay, people can abuse the system very easily.

Not with what's call Post Offer Employment Testing.

The employer can offer the job to an employee, contingent on them getting tested. At that point, any and all medical history questions can be asked by the testing clinic, and all info can be relayed back to the employer, who then can terminate the offer of employment if the employee cannot complete the physical requirements for the job.

This also helps establish a baseline for the employees who are hired and get hurt later.

Dude.... you just covered about half a season's worth of episode material for A-HOLE PATROL!!! Great job!

Heck, I'm fired up now, and am starting an official thread for this kinda stuff... I have a good one already...

Yeah, man... Luckily as a smaller business (and non-Union, of course), we have much more latitude with who we choose to hire, but our insurance has been on the rise for the past few years, too, as we've had some heavy claimers (God bless 'em -- not their fault). There may be a point where it's actually cheaper for me to consider a private plan over our group.

Hopefully that would also cover looking back into a persons medical history and seeing if they're the perpetually injured type... Not talking about the occasional colds, etc...

T-Bone,

Where the hell do you work??? Any normal employer would fire the hell out of someone who calls in sick, then is seen at a bar with a boyfriend!!! If I worked with this girl, she wouldn't like me too much. I've had 2 wisdom teeth pulled at the same time, than had to report back to duty! People like that make me sick, and I wouldn't think twice about turning her in for her faking her problems at home. People like that make the rest of us suffer that are actually trying to work and earn a living.....and the same can be said to people who are on Welfare!

I could go on, and on about how I LOVE the Welfare system!

Yep, everything is fair game.

Also, if the employee is untruthful about any aspect if their history, the offer of employment can be rescinded.

FMLA (Family Medical Leave of Absence) is a good thing when used for the right reasons, but on the flip side, it can also be abused like a motherfucker.

Even IF we report seeing someone outside of work when they're supposedly sick, it's all Hear-Say. Someone from management would have to be the ones witnessing it.

Sure people have used sick days for things other than being sick, myself included... but it's not done EVERY weekend, and abused like hell like a few certain people do.

I had surgery to remove a tumor two Fridays ago and was back at the studio on Monday, even though it hurt to breathe or walk. Lazy people piss me off.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Man, I hope you're alright! I guess you're doing better though if you're back at work. So, a recording studio? If so, I never knew you worked in a studio! Maybe I could come up and record some tunes in NC!

My last company allowed FMLA to be used in 1 hour increments. Employees who have been there at least 1 year qualify for 12 week's worth of FMLA. The time is not paid (unless used also as sick or vacation), but at 40 hours x 12 weeks, it comes out to 480 hours per year.

One day, we calculated that you could take off every Friday (not counting 2 of them for 2 week's vacation) and only use 400 hours. That would leave another 2 full weeks of FMLA time.

It is a great benefit for the employee, and I have used it a couple of times when a new child was born. It leaves the employer and co-workers completely vulnerable to abuse, however, with little recourse.

My 2 Cents, they pay me to do a Job and If I dont like it I get another Job. Pretty Simple Right? But no, in my particular line of work, the one I see the most is people getting workers comp, staying on it till it runs out, find another Job and then they come in and Quit! Which would not be such a big deal except I end up doing their FUCKING WORK which does piss me off just a little.

Not only that, but I think when people use excuses like that, it usually leads to some really bad karma for them.

The world has really changed over the years though. I've been working hard ever since I was about 12 years old. Mowing lawns in the summer and scooping snow in the winter was my first gig. I come from a mentality where if I want more stuff and to be more successful, I just have to be a honest hard working individual. But now adays, that's a dying attitude.

The bottom line is if a supervisor were to discapline or fire any one of these people for abusing the system, in most cases the supervisor would be accused of not being a "Team Player" by their superiors. I know because it's happened to me in the past.

When I was in high school, I was the only kid on the block who purchased completely on their own a sailboat, fully loaded fishing boat with motor, cb radio, fishing gear, etc, radio controlled airplanes, 16 speed racing bike, etc. etc. My parent's didn't buy me a single fucking one of these things. I even purchased my own first car without any help from my parents. During high school, I would have between 3 and 5 summer jobs at the same time! Because I wanted more stuff. My parents only provided me with what they were legally required to provide....food, clothing and shelter. That was basically it but sometimes they didn't do a good job with that.

As for unions, I stay away from them. They are only good if the business is shitty to the employees. But 9 times out of 10, a great business is overrun with shitheads who are shielded by their union. And that is why I do not shop at Safeway. Workes for Safeway will go on strike because they want increased wages and benefits. The Union spokesperson gets on the news and explains that many of the workers at Safeway are right out of high school, a single parent with two kids, etc. and they can't survive on what Safeway is paying them.

But shouldn't these young adults have thought about that before they made up their minds they weren't going to go to college but have children instead and remain single? Places like Saveway are turning out people like this every single day. And the people who have to foot the bill are the people shopping at Safeway, because the prices only go up on their products.

I was thinking the exact same thing! I would never use my child as an excuse to get out of work. Since I own my own business, that would be really stupid of me anyways.

There are some of us out here who DO still believe in working hard to earn the things we have. I had surgery several years ago (when I was teaching) that had some complications so I was supposed to be out of work for 3 weeks. I stayed home for 2 weeks. I had to get permission from my doctor to go back to work early. Why did I do this? I thought the substitute was doing a crappy job, and I didn't want my kids to miss out on another week of their education.

I was working for a publishing company 3 years ago when I needed a hysterectomy. I had already put it off for a few years, and my doctor let me put it off a few more months so I could schedule it after a big project was supposed to be finished. There were delays in the project, so it still wasn't finished when it was time for my surgery. I was supposed to take at least 2 weeks off. I took 10 days. I was checking emails on the day I got home from the hospital. The first few days I was back, I really couldn't focus and was on the verge of falling asleep.

The king of hard work in my book is my husband. He works in a fairly high-risk industry. He has had pretty severe injuries 3x (almost lost a finger in a grinder, flash burn on his face, and cut tendons in his finger on a shaker table). He has never taken off more than the absolute minimum amount of time to recover. He has never filed a workman's comp claim. If the temp is 10 degrees and it's snowing, he's usually working outside on some piece of equipment freezing his butt off. If it's 90 degrees, he's outside standing in a metal box welding something as the sweat causes him to get electrical shocks. I'm not making any of this up.
