Dokken, Journey and Rush

Postby Saint John » Tue May 06, 2008 11:13 pm

I'm passed out last night and I left the "AOR" music channel on on the television. I wake up to some screaming fucking guitars at 1:37 am and think to myself "What the fuck is this?!?!?" I look up and low and fucking behold there's Don Dokken staring at me with his hand outstretched like the one Rip used to have in his avatar. It was the song "Tooth And Nail." The music channels don't play videos, but rather change the screen every minute or so and offer up a picture and some general trivia. They went on to say how Reb Beach replaced Lynch...who left to form Lynch Mob. Also, Don recorded background vox for the Scorpions but they were never used. Cool song, all in all. Oh yeah...right after this song they played Stone In Love!!! They showed the Augeri fronted lineup at one point as well as Perry. Gave some stats about Departure and how it peaked at number 8 on the Billboard chart in 1980, and how Escape went to number 1 in 1981. After that was the beginning of a Rush song...TV OFF!!!

I stand corrected, Mel. It was the "Arena Rock" channel. There's also 70's, 80's and 90's just to name a few.

Ok, all joking aside, this is very serious... I think you've had what we call an encounter. I think you were visited! This was all prophesied about centuries ago, and I don't have the exact verses on hand, but I believe in either 1st or 2nd Don it mentions that "in those days before Lightning shall Strike the earth Again, signs and wonders shall increase, and your women shall dream dreams and your men shall see visions" -- something like that.

Was it just a flat image, or did he actually come out of the TV toward you, like that girl in The Ring, except only much better looking? Either way, this is highly significant, and surely a sign from above in these last days before LSA hits the shelves here in North America.

WOW!!!!

I am still floored every time I hear YYZ. If I remember correctly, it was nominated for a Grammy.

Yes, you do:

This was nominated and was the runner up for the Best Rock Instrumental award in the 1982 Grammys. It lost to The Police's "Behind my Camel."

Other YYZ facts:

YYZ is the transmitter code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Every airport is assigned a unique 3 letter code, and that code is always being transmitted so that pilots can tell, roughly, where they are and verify that their navigational radios are tuned properly. These codes are also written on your luggage tags when you fly. The intro to the song is Morse code for "YYZ."

In the March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine, Alex Lifeson explained the bizarre-sounding harmonics heard before the solo: "I create them by playing off the pick and my thumb. I hold the pick so there's a slight edge of it showing between my thumb and finger. This allows my thumb to mute the string, and that's what causes the harmonic to ring."

The crashing noise you hear between the breaks of the guitar solo is the sound of windchimes tied to a 2x4 slapped against a wood table. The band confirmed this in an interview on WNEW New York in the winter of 2002.

Geddy Lee's bass performance on this song has been praised by many websites and magazines as one of the best in Rock history. Some fans believe his bass playing is better when he's not singing.

This was one of the few songs used on the PS2 game Guitar Hero 2 that was not a remake by Wavegroup.

I've always thought, at least in his early years with the band, that he sounded like an older brother of The Chipmunks.
