Omg. Am I the only one who thinks the "same letter" thing is stupid? ESPECIALLY with 18 kids?!?!?!??!?!

No, you are not -- one of the many reasons I called it "geeky".

It's a major criticism on my part -- let kids be kids -- chores are one thing, but shared parenting responsibilities are another. Heck, I know some people who keep pumping out a few, and get the kids to watch the others while they sit on their fat asses and watch TV. This isn't too far off that mark.

Reminds me of Groucho Marx.
He had a show in the old days,,forget what it was called.
He was interviewing this couple with 16 or 18 kids.
As they were talking he said'I like my cigar a lot,but I do take it out now and again'.Classic.
Good luck to them though.

Nah...Before the last 40-50 years, large families were the norm and the older kids ALWAYS helped out in whatever way they could. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Her hobby is fine, her husband could use a little snippity snip snip, though.
But then again, it's their life, if they can raise 'em... more power to them.

If they really do live debt free, that's awesome. However, I worked with a guy that had 13 kids and he used the welfare system to get free medical, food, etc. I have a problem with that because the guy made about $100,000 a year and he put himself in that situation. He shouldn't be entitled to any welfare as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure how he was able to pull it off either.

The home schooling, to me, is the thing that seemed like maybe not the best choice, or at least not one that I would make. School is an important part of development, socialization, etc. Yes I know, if there are 18 kids, that's pretty damn social, but it's different.

But whatever. Not my family, not my business.

That's a fallacy that's brought up by a lot of anti home schooling people. With all the social problems that kids have these days, I'm not sure why so many people still believe this crap. I'd like to see a lot more people stiff the government schools in favor of home schooling.

Q. How Does a Homeschooler Change a Light Bulb?

A. First, mom checks three books on electricity out of the library, then the kids make models of light bulbs, read a biography of Thomas Edison and do a skit based on his life.

Next, everyone studies the history of lighting methods, wrapping up with dipping their own candles.

Then, everyone takes a trip to the store where they compare types of light bulbs, as well as prices, and figure out how much change they’ll get if they buy two bulbs for $1.99 and pay with a five dollar bill.

On the way home, a discussion develops over money.

Finally, after building a ladder out of branches dragged from the woods, the light bulb is installed.

Hey, 30,000 bangs, that's a pretty good warranty! :D
If you figure ages 18 to about 70 (cuz after that, why bother...lol!), that's 11.09 times a week.

I was fortunate enough to be able to send my kids to private, Catholic schools. But I will tell you right now, if I was starting all over without the resources? I'd homeschool. Homeschoolers are not isolated, like I once thought. They get together with other home schooled kids for outings, etc. And.. they have rigorous curriculum standards and tests they must take.

Lots of kids getting scholarships to college who happened to be homeschooled! :)

It's not a true mullet, since mullets are long in the back and cut short on top and on the sides. Regardless, yes, her hair is atrocious.

Each time I see them and the geeky way they organize and run their family, it's just a huge personal turnoff to me.

As for the religious aspect of it, when my sister first got married about 15 years ago, she said they'd decided not to use any kind of birth control and to let God decide how many kids they should have. I told her, "I can answer that for you -- quite a few. Are you ready?" After the 3rd kid (and she has 3 beautiful daughters), she decided she that being a full-time mom to 3 was taxing her beyond the limits, and got her tubes tied.

If this is God's plan for their life, he'll provide for them whatever the circumstance.

Agreed - and it sure looks like He has, judging by the photo of the family. That's a pretty nice house, and they must be masters at doing all they can with what they have. It's a cute pic. All joking aside, my husband is one of nine and his family is very, very close.

Very cool family..very down to earth people..it's called the 'buddy system' .. not parenting..
Nothing wrong with the kids doing chores..even laundry and cooking..they play all the time and have lots of friends..take great vacations together..
They are obviously a very close family and of course always there for each other..in helping..especially to build that amazing house..they are learning many great skills..they seem very happy and healthy..
They aren't doing anything wrong..they are taking care of them and supporting them..unlike some of the stories we read around here on how children are treated..these children are loved very much..
Actually..they are more 'normal' than many families and what gets me is how well behaved they are..some people cannot even control one kid..
I think it's a great thing and very fascinating..it might be wrong if they couldn't support them or weren't taking care of them..or were sponging of the government..they are doing there own thing and taking care of their own business..kudos..

Great post, Dave. 8)

I second this. One of my brother's children are home schooled, and are light years ahead of other kids their age. The oldest is 11. As far as social activities go, they regularly have outings with other home schooled kids, and in the summer, some of the moms have "classes" that any of the kids can attend (sign language, foreign language, etc...). They also do the "regular" kids stuff - baseball, soccer, dance, even golf.

Home schooling is vastly misunderstood by the majority of people that haven't explored it as a viable alternative to the decaying school systems in many cities...
