And the first pick in the Rock Music Draft is....

Postby ProgRocker53 » Mon May 12, 2008 4:58 am

...okay people, here's the deal.

There's a Musical Draft, and you have the first draft pick of the first round, to pick who you feel is the most talented musician that ever lived, that would truly make the band you're building go above and beyond all the others.

Who is your pick? Also, what rock musicians do you think would be surefire first-round draft picks? Who are some sleepers that could be awesome late-round steals? What musicians will go undrafted (Cobain, I'm looking at you)?

Neal is a definite first-round pick. A proven songwriter, lyricist, singer, and brilliant guitar player who has tackled styles ranging from metal to blues to new wave.

Considering alot of music I love is Neal-related in some way, it would be hard for me not to make him a top-priority pick.

Agreed. He got the nod over Perry because he's been so good for so darn long and he just keeps going and going. Perry gets the nod if we're talking about a 10 year period, but Neal has been doing it at the highest level for almost forty years...I mean, think about that. 8)

The Beach Boys are one of the few bands I've never actually "gotten." I understand they're very influential but I've just never viewed the music I've heard from them as being anything more than just average.

I'll have to listen to them in an album context sometime, instead of just their chart-topping hit singles. Perhaps I'd understand the whole deal with them a little more then.

For me personally, I would go with The Edge - great songwriter and incredibly innovative...

Agreed that Neal is way, way up on the list - maybe a 1a pick... :)

Neal did sort of poorly on the Wonderlik Exam, but I overlooked it because of his raw talent.

Edge will go, but in the mid to later rounds.. he'll have a solid career for a championship-caliber team (U2), but his talents will be overshadowed by an overrated QB (singer Bono) who constantly steals press attention away from more deserving accomplishments.

I'd have to go with Perry. I tend to focus on vocals so I'd have him as a first round vocalist and my first overall pick. Perry was The Voice and demonstrated good writing capability as well.

My second pick would Schon on lead guitar. Schon can sing a bit, can play like a bastard, and can write as well. I'd make Schon the quarter back to make sure the band rocked. 2 ballads per cd max and 11 cuts per cd max.

I'll have to noodle on the rest.

Sleeper pick: Lindsey Buckingham. The song writing architect of Fleetwood Mac and one of the most unique guitarists of all time. Never plays with a guitar pic.

I not sure I understand the question. What does "first draft pick of the first round" mean?

If we are putting together our ultimate band the first person I would enlist is Steve Perry. You gotta get the vocalist right. You can have the hottest band in the world but if the vocalist is crap you'll get nowhere. Conversley if you gotta great singer and the band is crap you can get away with murder. Just look at Zoo.

I go with Eddie Van Halen; although I know his stock has dropped due to off the field issues, His Team goes nowhere without him.

I was going to say the same thing! Can we have Neal and Lindsey? Neal is a master. Lindsey can make one guitar sound like ten and really is good at the acoustic stuff.

Any chance of JSS going for singer? And Ann Wilson, too?
