You can tell from that clip that RF has more Rock oriented roots than SP did...

Yes, but he's simply referencing in this interview on 5/08/08 what had happened early on (months ago) before the official announcement was made.
He didnt say what happened earlier on,his statement is about current comments ,that is why it is dated 5/08/08

Wait, there's a recording of RF singing Winds of March?

That wasn't too bad actually.

The song(s) mentioned were created just prior to Perry joining. When Perry replaced Fleishman, he was the one to sing and record them, largely as is. This is just before Perry started flexing his creative muscles in a dominating fashion. Before he gave the band their first hit. Until that happened, he couldn't quantify his choices. Once he showed the band his worth, they gave him creative control.

Think about it. Perry just walks in the door, the band doesn't really want him (e.g. "he's the guy on the inside, on the outside", sound familiar?). He's not going to push his weight around and insist on creative choices or make waves at this point. So he sang the songs largely as Gregg Rollie fashioned them, with minor suggestions here and there plus his own unique spin in his delivery.

Once he had a hit under his belt, however, "the band was along for the ride, and they just let the reigns go" (Neal's quote from VH1 BTM about who took charge of the band's creative direction: Steve Perry).

So they're not "rip off's" as your jaded ass would like to spin it. :P   They're covers.

Boston released their debut album in 1976. Certainly a familiar hook there.

Very. I'm amazed at the number of people at the concert - Journey did have a following pre-Perry. Fleishman, while not super-impressive, had his own style.

And he was the first Journey singer to be unceremoniously dumped. A dubious distinction!

Hey St. John, I betcha you don't like "Winds of March" because it wasn't a chart-topping hit single.

Yep. I've only seen Fleischman perform on the videos from that concert, and he didn't make a fan out of me. I'm glad they decided to let him pursue other opportunities.

No, I don't like it because it takes too long to get going and I'm usually already sleeping by the time it takes off. The true stars of that song are Rolie and Schon. Perry's vocals are like that of a 18 year old girl getting hammered for the first time. The vocals are simply painful to listen to.

I don't see how it "takes too long to get going."

The acoustic chords and piano work in the beginning are absolutely beautiful. It takes me back to another time and place, very intricate and engaging arrangement.

Perry's voice coming in is angelic and seductive. I can feel the warmth and passion dripping off him. I think it's one of Perry's best vocal songs, especially that wailing bit he does right before the up-tempo portion kicks in.

Words alone can't describe the jam with Schon, Dunbar, and Rolie ripping shit up. One of Journey's most ass-kicking moments in song. An absolute shame that they don't play this one live very much. Quite possibly one of their best tunes overall. Scorching.
