We go between 5000 & 7500 with both cars, usually closer to 7500, Toyotas can handle that, lol.

My brother-in-law had a Honda all through college that he NEVER changed the oil in, & that damn thing still ran just fine, lol.

I've never really thought about this, but when I got my Toyota MR-2 Spyder and RAV-4, I was told by the dealership that the engines for both were designed to only need oil changes every 7,000 miles, but that they still recommended every 5,000 to be safe -- and I took them there for quite a while to get that done every 5,000 miles. I thought there was something special about the Toyotas... haha! I currently do every 3,000 in my Eclipse, and every 5,000 in the RAV-4. Maybe I should go longer... Yeah, I've been under the impression that changing the oil more frequently puts much less wear/tear on the engine. No surprise if this is a bill of goods they've sold us...

No shit, I change it every 3000 with synthetic (Royal Purple) and gladly do it.....an ounce of prevention.....

The engine that we rebuilt from her car had well over 200K miles on it, yet the block didn't need to be bored over. And we've always changed the oil in her car way before the 3K mark. What's important to know is that oil loads up with small pieces of metal which will start to circulate with the oil and cause metal parts in the engine to wear out. Sort of like if you see those purfectly smooth rocks in a stream. The rocks became smooth because of the particles in the water like sand which washed across them for an amount of time. Same with an engine, if the oil is full of metal particles because it's not been changed, engine parts will start to wear out faster. And then oil also can loose it's viscosity, which means it really isn't lubricating as it should. The oil changes under stress and heat and looses it's ability to provide effective lubication. Most times it's the piston rings and valves first. That's when you notice a puff of dark smoke coming out of the exhaust during start up. It only will get worse from there and it will start to smoke more even after initial start up. And then when it really gets bad, you will notice some really shitty gas mileage, because the engine is loosing a lot of compression. At about that time the plugs will foul out alot due to excessive oil getting in the cyliders past the rings. Which means the plugs will need to be cleaned or changed more frequently and a fouled plug means the engine will start to miss and then it will run extremely shitty, rough, and perhaps die at idle occassionally.

I remember back in high school, I got my very first vehicle paid for on my own cause my parents didn't do a fucking thing for me at all. My first vehicle was a 68' shortbed Ford Pickup truck with a big block 390, auto. Man that truck ran like a sports car, I'd get that thing going sideways around the turns, which the kids call it "Drifting" now, got to remember that this happened back when everysinger fronting a garage band dressed like Diamond Dave. Even though, I didn't know that changing the oil was something that needed to be done. I just thought that if the oil is at the level on the stick, it's good to go. So every week or two, I'd have to add a quart. When a friend of mine from high school came to my house and checked out my truck, we popped the hood and checked the oil. When he saw that the oil was more black then the tires, he straightened me out with the knowledge about changing oil and why it was important. We changed the oil and I've never stopped that process since.

Great article on how often you REALLY need to change your oil. I'm doing more and more research on stuff like this to better educate myself. Really have no trust in info that comes from marketing anymore, and don't see the need to waste money when it's not necessary.

If I do my calculations correctly, that equates to about $4.85/gallon.

We are right now at over 1.50 Euro a litre here in Germany....that is insane.
