Solo Steve....

Anything that sounds like any of these:

Go Away - mid tempo
Foolish Heart - slow song
She's Mine - bluesy rock
If Only For The Moment, Girl - kinda "Island", I guess...? :?
Lost Angels - uptempo rocker
Let Go - uptempo rocker
Can't Let You Go - bluesy ballad
If You Need Me, Call Me - uptempo rocker(newer version - "Whenever it rains" at the end KILLS me every time....on headphones...)
Can't Stop - uptempo rocker

I think you are more apt to get an easy listening, Peter Cetera type CD from Perry than anything else. Steve Perry has resided in the ex-rocker pasture with the the likes of the 62 year-old Rod Stewart for years. I don't think Perry has it in him to rock. Perry probably fits in with the Disney soundtrack crowd. I can picture him doing duets for animated love stories with Peabo Bryson. His rock days have long passed him by. Face it, a rock CD would be risky, but a song from a hit cartoon about penguins or a princess would pay a few bills.

Oh I think he could rock it out if he wanted to. Good recent example............ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsZXbli4t4c

Good song!! Crappy arrangement. The lead singer sucks and the punkish approach is kind of lame. Can you say "Garage Band"? But it is a good song. I would have liked to hear what Perry would have done with that back in the day.

Yeeesh...That is the soundtrack for a Hall Mark Hall of Fame made for television movie...starring one of those Little House on the Prarie chicks that always show up in those things....

Wow...that's like the 3rd time I've ever listened to that song and I must say that I agree with you. He sounds pretty good on the song, but he sounds weak and on the edge of cracking during the chorus. Man, starting around the 2:30 mark he sounds awful...and this is in the studio. No wonder there was no tour. Great axe work by Neal, though.

The vocal cords sound like they may have a node or two. Too many high C's will ruin your voice no matter who you are. I think any Journey song would have sounded just as good a half or full-step lower. Those songs sat too high to be song night after night..

Neal seems to get better every year. I give the guy credit. He is one of the few "old timers" that can hang with the Vinnie Moores, Tony MacAlpines and Paul Gilberts of the world. He is a helluva guitar player.

Agreed. I actually prefer his voice with the more smokey rasp to it, more depth and soul IMO. If he sounds anything like this, I'd be a happy camper. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIaBODKuars

Also Racer X, where he did some of his finest shredding. Some of the stuff on Technical Difficulties is just stupidly spectacular. His technique is out of this world, and like Neal, he knows a good melody. You need both in my book. Neal is fast and flawless with his melodic runs. His playing on the new CD sounds fantastic from what I have heard so far.

True that. Didn't get much into Racer X, I have a soft spot for Mr. Big (lol that didn't come out right  ) I love Paul's work with Billy.......amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOT5csku ... re=related

I didn't realize until recently that Paul was the one who wrote Green-Tinted 60s Mind, either........one of my fave Mr. Big songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqIZ1eKjBVY

Do I have "perryears" or what? Raspy, yes. But I don't hear weak and cracking voice. Would the professional singers on this board chime in? Do you think maybe that's why this song was not on the main record?

Relative to what I'm used to hearing from Mr. Perry his voice was very weak on that song. And I used the term "on the edge of cracking." He never cracked. It just seemed as if he was about to and the song wasn't very vocally demanding.

I can't get youtube in the office, but I deduce that we're talking about "I Can See It In Your Eyes" and I can't stand seeing anything bad said about that song. I love it. Quite frankly, that could be an instrumental and I'd love it just as much, but even with vocals it's 100 times better than that Guff thing. Dear god, the man was like forty-seven, was he still supposed to sound like he was twenty-seven?

Fuck it all, Steve Smith OWNED that recording anyway. And Neal's work was pretty killer also.
That should have been one of the original tracks, damn it.

While it would be nice to get something new, I'm not holding my breath.

It seems like it's always "maybe NEXT year".

Yes but to be fair, all this hoopla has been over something that Perry himself never directly stated. It wasn't in quotes and it came form the interviewer and who knows what what said to him that caused him to interpret it that way.

This time it can't really be blamed on Perry if nothing comes of the rumor.

Not to mention, the "next year" part actually was inferred by Andrew (I believe), not even the interviewer, and even Andrew said IF.

My thoughts too. Perry might do a couple up-tempo songs, but his rock days are over.
Do some covers. Do some new ballads. Do some R&B groovin stuff. And that's it. Biggest thing is don't try to prove that 'you still have it'. Sing what you are capable of today. Forget 1994. Forget 1984. Sing what you can for 2008. Don't over-extend. Then go to Vegas for a couple of shows, and wash your hands of the whole biz.

Didn't he sound like this for Stung out? I'm sure there's damage, too. But I also think he just liked to sing like that.
