A Request/Idea for Jonathan Cain

Postby ProgRocker53 » Wed May 28, 2008 11:58 am

Hey JC. What's up buddy? I know you're reading.

I just wanted to request that you play at least one song on the next record, or maybe even a solo record, using a CONTINUUM pad.

These are quite possibly the coolest keyboard-related instruments of all time and I'm sure you could play the heck out of one.

Do look into it, bro. You'd have some fun with it.

Oh, by the way, the Hammond sound isn't "dated." It's cool. Run with it a little more sometime.

Considering the latest Jon drama on this board, I seriously immediately thought this was some kind of reference to maxi pads. XD

A Continuum vs. Guitar duel with Frig and Neal would be magical.

I want one of these things but they're around $6,000 and from what I hear the learning curve is very steep.

For those who don't know, these pads generate sound using three-dimensional sensory. The Y-axis of your playing, X-axis of your playing, and how you press/how hard you press all go into deciding how your note sounds.

I'd love to be locked in a room with a Continuum for a day.

Makes the synth sound like a guitar. Don't see the point really. Jon plays guitar in the band already, so why synth a guitar sound?

I'd say if he uses it, he shouldn't use it on a regular basis and especially not in place of what he does with the keyboard already. What he could/should do, is design a new song around something he creates with it. Sort of like how Precious Time was built around harmonica riffs. (love that effing song too)

Good points, I agree for the most part.

Especially about "Precious Time." One of my top ten Journey songs. Wonderful tune.

Hope they peel that one off with Arnel in concert sometime. I don't think they performed it much even with Perry.

I'd need to be put in a straightjacket if they busted out PT with me in attendance. LOVE, LOVE that song.

I heard an MP3 of one they did with Augeri, with less than stellar results. Deen goofed the drum bridge bigtime, almost lost the beat, and Augeri, well....

Neal Jon and Ross were hot on it though. Was impressed with Jon's harmonica skills.

Haha, me too, because I don't know what a continuum pad is -- relating to music.

So lets get this straight - you want Cain to play a 'keyboard' that sounds like a guitar when you already have one of the worlds greatest guitar players in the band?

I can see it now, Neal might end up having someone playing one of these behind the scenes whilst he gives his fingers a rest on stage - Continuum-gate!

It did sound cool though but maybe not for Journey.

LOL!!!

It doesn't always sound like a guitar, at least from what I've read. It just depends how you play it, and Rudess was opting to make it sound like a guitar.
