YOu sure about that ? Neal was quoted in a thread as saying when he closed his eyes that the guy sounded just like Perry in his prime. I dont think that Geoff Tate could ever sound like Perry...

Ahh...That was probably Jeff then, not Geoff. I think there was some discussion about this guy a few months back. I think he was in Vegas, if my memory serves me correctly.

Tate did audition, though, and wrote some stuff with the guys.

Pre-Augeri, right? I'd love to hear some of what they came up with...

Yep...They also auditioned John West, who went on to front European prog rock band Royal Hunt.

I think some of "Walking Away From the Edge" was written at that time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

John West would have been an awesome choice for any band.

He's a great singer but I was disappointed that D.C. Cooper left Royal Hunt. As good as West is, I love Cooper's voice a whole lot more.

Jeff ? Not Soto right ? Is it the guy that sings for that new Journey cover band that has been on you tube ? That fucker sounds a ton like Perry but still not as much as Jason Kelty. He was a dead ringer 99% of the time..

No, not Soto. I can't remember his last name and don't know who he sings for now, if he does at all. All I remember is that Neal didn't think he was quite right for the job because he was a pretty heavy dude.

This Jeff (or Geoff) had a J tribute band in Vegas. Someone posted a picture of him awhile back. He had a little weight on him, so what? Vocals are what matters, IMO.

Other than Perry and Gramm, THAT is the guy I would pick if I could put a band together. His vocal work with Silent Force is outstanding also.

How do you know him?

Cool...It would be interesting to see what he could've done had he taken the job in Priest back when he auditioned. There are a couple of tracks on "Infatuator" that sound quite Priest-ish.

He definitely would have nailed the old Priest stuff...I don't think he would have fit the Jugulator material very well. I'd love to hear him do some Journey styled stuff.

I had contacted him asking, basically, how to become a vocalist for hire. We ended up talking about LOF and I mentioend he should do an AOR record. He said he's always wanted to, it just hasn't come up. He then asked if we (LOF) had any material for the possible output. I said yeah, we could come up with something...then that was it. Haven't heard from him since...LOL!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Ripper's voice, either. Very talented but there's something about his voice that I don't like.

As best as I can piece it together, Journey Geoff was one of the singers on Neal's shortlist while Augeri's voice was crapping out (which was often).
This is why I put zero stock in these gushing affirmations that seem to accompany each singer's hiring ("Jeff Soto saved us!" or "Arnel gave me goosbumps!", just to name a few.)
PLEASE.
Neal and Jon treat the act of picking a new Journey singer with all the meticulous painstaking care of a slaughterhouse worker callously culling headless chicken carcasses off the evisceration line.

You know what else?
I believe this list of Perry understudies extends even further than we, or perhaps even Andrew, is privy to.

Courtesy of the Noticeboard....
Geoff is the guy on the lower far right.

If that's as big as the dude was when Neal saw him, then he really isn't all that big a dude.

Holy crap! You're amazing! I've seen a ton of your stuff on YouTube.

I'LL go ahead and pimp the band for ya.
