Give Arnel 7 YEARS and 7 albums... then the comparisons can be considered.

Ah...my old nemesis Slucero.

Good point regarding the criticisms about Perry's voice when he first joined the band.

hmm. i guess it's a matter of taste, but from the boots I have, Perry was pretty great right out of the gate. Even from those first few shows where they were introducing him to their fans...

& most of those tv shows - Midnight Special, Soundstage ,,, were within his first year, weren't they?

Not saying he was always perfect, but he was pretty great, to me.

And to me. All I meant was that hs voice was often criticized in the early days. Lest we forget that his nickname in the UK press was "The Duck"....

Yes - I am. Even I'm a bit lukewarm about the album overall this song is utterly brilliant. Best Journey song in ten years....

Schon like Butterfly, they even played it live.

The problem is with the lyrics, right ...
Well, I guess that a lot of female Journey fan love that song.

IMO, musically, it is not a bad song at all.

Butterfly is the most awful song Neal has ever been associated with. I'm still puking four years later.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night

Good point, H@wk. Hmmm.

OK, let's just go with "Castles Burning" and give those two an honorable mention.

Re: Re-recorded hits

Postby Since 78 » Fri Jun 06, 2008 2:45 pm

I was listening to disc 2 today and I don't know if its just me but I got the feeling I was listening to Greatest hits live. Then I wondered if maybe it was done intentionally. It sounded like Arnel was not trying to copy the studio versions, but the live versions instead. For example BGTY sounds like Perry from the ROR tour, Same with OTY and Stone in Love reminds me of Augeri on the 2001 DVD. Am I just hearing things? I have been a little stressed lately! And one other thing WITS kind of sounds like the Dream Theater cover instead of Journey. :? Thoughts?

Absolutely. I've had it on a loop these past two days. And surely that memorable piano riff from Cain makes this an obvious choice for a single?

Like a poor sad Loon I do imagine how it would sound with Perry singing this...especially at the crescendo toward the end....where Arnel's shortcomings come into play a bit.

Imagine how devastating this tune would be then? Oh well.

Still...great to see Journey's song-writing reaching the heights of the classic era on this track....

You know, so many people bitched about that song. Didn't have much of a problem with it. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't dogshit either. It could've been shorter and there were spots where I wish SA would've recut the vocal (In a cage, tried to escape, silent rage). The song actually reminds me of a song by Something Corporate called "Me and the Moon". It talks about being a Butterfly not allowed to fly due to a shitty husband. The difference is, the gal actually kills the husband in the song. Great song, by the way. Maybe that's why the Augeri tune doesn't rub me the wrong way. It's like the other song's part I.

I *gasp* even like Believe. Reminds me of "I've Gotta Feeling" by The Beatles. It's just a bit long and could've benefitted from a decent bridge. However, listen to ANY hit song on the radio these days. What the hell happened to verses, bridges, and chorus? It's all chorus these days- and shitty ones at that. I've heard a lot worse tracks than both. There aren't many Journey songs I DON'T like- Just the Rain, Trial By Fire, the reggae one.

I haven't looked yet. WHY is Journey not learning from their past with singers and schedules? Grrrr. Well, Arnels' been slogging it out in Bars for years nightly (bar shows are usually 4 hours in the states, at least mine are) and Journey's set is probably going to be 2 hours max. I think that he's in a good position to handle it. I hope I'm right. It'd be a shame to lose a brilliant singer.

Yes, gladly.
"I'm Not that Way" might be perfunctory boy band shlock, but it shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the musically incompetent "Butterfly" and "Believe." Both songs are total amateur hour, penned by someone who clearly doesn't even grasp songwriting 101. "Believe," tbe principle offender of the two, isn't even a song, it's just a chorus on loop. With a little help from Cain, they might have turned out almost OK.

From what Is saw on You Tube, he had breaks between songs, and he sung alot of different vocal range not the Perry vocal cord grinder material he ll be singing in a different city everynight. I hope he makes it also. I was pleasantly surprised how good how sounded on both Cds {Id rather have vinyl with the big album jackets} and you dont have to say "I told you so" I saw it in the other thread

Five stars.

The re-recordings are okay, Arnel sounds good and I like the small differences in the songs.

The new stuff is AMAZING.

Does anyone know how it's selling?

I don't get it. The band axes Steve Augeri, and then writes a bunch of songs that are perfectly suited for him? Jeff Scott Soto could've done a great job on the new tracks also, so it's clear that Arnel is here to cover the classics. Which we didn't really need in the first place. Hmmmm.

I have to say Arnel is talented, and there isn't a performance on the album that lacks passion. I give him the utmost credit. And, I can applaud the band for going back to the Evolution-era sound on Like A Sunshower, easily my favorite track. After All These Years is without question one of Journey's best-ever ballads, and is possibly the best crafted song of Jonathan Cain's songwriting career. And, Turn Down the World Tonight is such a good wrapup to the album that it makes the Neal Schon explosion that is The Journey (Revelation) almost a regrettable inclusion.

Other than those standouts, I hear a lot of ripoffs here. Very little sounds like straight Journey. Cross up some Van Hagar and Styx and you'll get Change for the Better. Never Walk Away (oops, almost called it Never Too Late), Wildest Dreams, and What it Takes to Win sound more like Survivor songs, a band that was little more than a Journey knock-off when it was around back in the day. The one truly regrettable inclusion here is the revamped and homogenized Faith in the Heartland, which was possibly the best song of Augeri's tenure in Journey.

As for the re-recorded songs, I can say that I like the production. I also like the live vibe, and many of the songs sound like their concert versions which have always been great. But if I want to hear the concert versions again, I'll go to a show or put on a live CD. This is a misguided tactic Wal Mart uses to push product that will never be appreciated by a hardcore fan.

I wish Journey the best of luck with this release. It's likely to speed past the sales of any post-Perry album, if not for the songs, then for the value of the total package. But, unfortunately, Revelation comes nowhere near the standard set by Journey in their heyday. And, only briefly, does it come anywhere near their underappreciated Arrival album.
