Agreed.

Does anyone actually think it will move that many copies?

I DO, because the CD of NEW material is that good! Now, whether or not the important radio markets support this album, is the key. Plus the guys need a couple more major network TV appearances under their belt, after they get back from Europe.

80k CD's...40k 2CD units...

That's why I don't like RIAA math...

Except, by the sounds of the article, it is how many "units" are sold first week. 80,000 units equals 160,000 CDs for the RIAA...

I believe you are right. The listings on the top 200 albums charts are based on the actual number sold via Soundscan numbers. The RIAA doesn't deal with that aspect of it, they deal with units shipped minus returns after the first 30 days. If it the album is a multi-disc set, they count each one as a separate sale.

Well, the boys are on the move. They were in Arkansas for a couple of days and then out to Madrid today. Not coming back to the US until the end of the month.

They are on pace to sell 80,000 units this week, and that’s almost a million dollars worth of product at $11.88.

Remember that we are talking about two separate entities.

Soundscan is what charts sales and creates the Billboard chart number based on sales. The figure reported is 80,000 units sold regardless of how many discs are in the package.. Which could put them in the top 5 or 10.

RIAA is what tracks the number of units shipped. They count double albums as two units. For the RIAA the number is 160,000.

If that's the case then Lippard wins.

Technically, yes...but it's still officially logged as 80k sales for Journey...

I'm getting clarification of the units.....40k would be horrible with all the press of late, 80k would be good.

80,000 packages sold (160,000 in "official sales") might debut them as high as #2.

Def Leppard have sold over 100k in the US Alone in just over 4 weeks and selling 8000k a week right about now of the new CD.

They were also just added into Rotation on VH1, so that should increase sales as well.

List of sales certification thresholds

CANADA
Gold Platinum Diamond
Albums - 50,000 100,000 1,000,000
Singles - 5,000 10,000 100,000
DVDs - 5,000 10,000 100,000
Digital Music- 10,000 20,000 200,000

UNITED STATES
Albums and Singles - 500,000 1,000,000 10,000,000
Music Videos - 50,000 100,000 1,000,000
Digital Music - 500,000 1,000,000

Multi-disc albums are counted once for each disc within the album if it is over 100 minutes in length. For example, each copy of OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (running time of 134:56), Tupac Shakur's All Eyez On Me (132:18), and Shania Twain's Up! (145:44), all three double albums, were counted twice, meaning each album was certified diamond after only 5 million copies were shipped.

Given the competition this week I think the 5th spot is the best they will get. Disturbed, Ween, NOW 28 and Rhiannon will do top the list IMO. But #5 for this band is phenominal!!

Turns out I'm mistaken...it is 80k projected 2CD units...it will register with RIAA as 160,000 in the certification process...

Good job, Journey!

But only 80k with Billboard. They should debut between 4 and 7.

Disturbed sold 250k-ish apparently... Journey's not getting #1. I think NOW will be 2nd, some generic R&B/Rap CD #3, and Journey somewhere between 4 and 6.

“Snakes & Arrows”, Rush’s first all new material album since 2002’s “Vapor Trails”, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard album chart with sales of 93,000 copies.

The Eagles are not a rock band by any stretch so the comparison is not really valid. They are a great pop band, but their live dvd proved that beyond any doubt that they are not rockers...zzzzzzzz I would expect a main stream pop band like the Eagles to outsell a more rock type of outfit. Granted, Journey ain't Van Halen, but the Eagles are to rock what Cheeze Whiz is to Bleu des Causses. Jesus...the Eagles?!?!?! WTF is that about? People sip wine and chew croissants when they go to an Eagles concert...Mali- freakin'- bu....

The Eagles have been country with a leaning toward rock, but their Walmart release was a straight up soft country album. These days, seems like country outsells rock overall.

I cannot listen to Country music. Not even todays Country. There's a twangy, 'sing about ordinary life problems like a simpleton with shit in my mouth and call it music' thing going on that I can't get past.

Not to mention that a woman always breaks some poor hillbilly's heart. For just once, I'd like to hear a country song where a guy has 4 girlfriends on the side, gets drunk and tunes up his wife once in a while, wins the lottery and leaves the bitch. That might make me listen, but Jesus H. Christ I'm tired of some redneck with a drawl whining over some skinny, barefoot bitch that left him.
