Stevew, is that really you? This was the first positive comment I've heard from you since I joined MR. :) 8)
Its me, and I do miss Steve A,and I wish Journey would have took a break, and maybe we woud be talking about him. As you know Journey is greedy, and we know the rest of the story. That aside. I love the music that Journey made. Personally they are retarded. I am separating myself from them personally{which i should have done in 2002}I love the music they have made, and I like most of Revelations. I would have rather had Jeremey sing for Journey, that didnt happen.I am enjoying all the new stuff, and Arnel is one hell of a singer, and a nice guy{like Augeri is} I hear accents, but I can understand every word he is singing. When I heard "Only The Young" thats what changed my mind about everything

Welcome back brother....I know Journey were all bunch of a-holes but it's all about music anyway. 8) :)

I get what you're saying about Open Arms. The original recording was recorded with Perry singing the chorus SO quietly and very delicate. Live, that nuance got lost, though I do love the version from Houston. I really liked the way Augeri did this because he approached it the same way as the original recording as does Arnel (quietly), who I think does it live amazingly well.

Only the Young in Chile was my first 'blown away moment' with Arnel, especially the note he does at the end of it. Perry NEVER did that and I was stoked after hearing it. After getting this new album, I'm glad things have worked out the way they have. Geez, Jeremey's getting what he wants and Arnel is getting to live a dream after years of having it pretty tough. Cool.

The new music is REALLY keeping me interested. I've played the album to death already.

I don't know about you guys, but getting new music from a longtime favorite band is always like Christmas to me. I get excited about it, then just play the shit out of it. Now, if we could just get back to REAL album covers instead of these tiny CD boxes.

By the way, the packaging for the new album is really nice as well.
And Stevew2-- I TOLD YA SO! ;)

Oh, and don't anybody ever say they like one singer's version of a song over Perry's....
it's not allowed. I said a similar thing about OTY when I first heard Arnel do it and... jeez, you'd think I'd told a room full of preschoolers that Santa was really one of their Dads.

I've said for years that Perry's vocals came across as very contrived on this song. This is probably the only song that I've heard so far that I think Arnel does better than Perry ever did. Perry simply sucked on this song. I like the Chile version were Arnel sings "How could our love be SOOOO blind...." This song and perhaps Only The Yound are two that I enjoy Arnel singing more. Perry could never pull that song off live...at least no version that I've ever heard. Perry is king with every other song, though. Most instances having a large disparity as far as the two vocalists go. Perry was simply the best ever. Just doesn't mean on every song. :)

Arnel actually goes higher than Perry on a lot of the slower stuff...and still seemingly has room to spare. Dude has pipes. Serious pipes.

yea, but I'll be surprised if he is still doing that on a regular basis halfway through the tour. Vocal acrobatics are an easy way to wear out your voice faster than you need to. That being said, if Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham can sing the way they do for years, ANYTHING is possible.

The issue is that Perry always ducked his own note on that one live.

Song has "Arms" at a higher note than "Open" starts at and he always ducked it and made it the same note.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wfYInIWoO1k

First time thru the chorus, compare the two times he sings "Open Arms" - both should be the same. They're not. First time he ducks it.

Everybody sure likes repeating this one.... even Shirley, hmmm.
The fact that the guy had been singing in clubs nightly for years (songs higher than these) would seem to indicate that he'll be able to handle it. I remember a Cain interview where he was saying that when he first heard Perry, he said to his chick that "no way could the guy do that every night".

I hope we're all surprised and he does hold up.

Again, funny how even within the circle of fans, so many different preferences...

the Houston version is the ONLY version I like. The chorus is so much better than on the studio version (which is one of my least favorite Jrny songs..),, also his voice is better, imo, just a tad deeper

Yes, yes he does. Perry's got more depth to his voice though. When Arnel sings, it's high, it's great, it's thin. Perry's voice is just...thicker. That's the only word I can use to describe it. Full.

JSS has a full voice. Augeri's was thin, but thicker than Arnel.

Anyone else follow what I mean? Because I'm not even sure I do.

I do-
Perry had a lot of bottom end and KILLER pitch. Seriously great pitch.
Jss- nice low end. High-end not to my liking at all.
Augeri- Not enough bottom end and, unfortunately, NOT good pitch and his high end was iffy (swapped to falsetto and a not great one at that, a lot- Don't Stop Believin' money note)
Arnel- High room to spare, mostly good pitch unless he approaches the note incorrectly, and some low end, but not as much as Perry's. Still, get the guy a killer mic and it will help. I did this because I also don't have a lot of low end and it helped immensely.
