Man Falls After Receiving Spirit, Sues

JUNE 5--Last June, Matthew Lincoln was attending an evening service at his nondenominational Tennessee church when he approached the altar where a visiting minister was offering individual prayers for parishioners. Assigned "catchers" were present on the altar in case congregants fainted, fell, or otherwise lost control. When the minister, Robert Lavala, slightly touched his forehead, the Knoxville-area man "received the spirit and fell backwards." Except nobody was there to catch him, Lincoln charges in a $2.5 million lawsuit filed yesterday against Lakewind Church and its pastors. Lincoln, 58, claims that he fell backwards, striking his head against the "carpet-covered cement floor," according to the Circuit Court complaint, which was first reported by Courthouse News Service. A copy of Lincoln's lawsuit can be found below. Since he already suffered from a "degenerative disc disease of his neck and back," Lincoln, a former church board member, contends the fall exacerbated the pre-existing condition and has caused him "severe and permanent" injuries. As a result of the fall, Lincoln, a recording engineer, claims that he is no longer able to care for his disabled daughter. Lincoln alleges that Lakewind and its pastors were "negligent in not supervising the catchers to be sure that they stood behind the person being prayed for...should they have a dizzying, fainting, or falling in the spirit as had occurred on many occasions before." Lincoln's lawyer, J.D. Lee, told TSG that the church's insurer, Zurich of North America, rejected an insurance claim, asserting that Lincoln should have realized that no catchers were situated behind him.

Man, I don't even know what to say... haha.... I don't know about this church or pastor, but I wouldn't mind seeing more tent revival style scammers and career televangelists who line people up to do this get sued just for making people believe their carnival acts are real. There is a LOT of fakery going on out there, and a fool and his money are soon parted.

Interesting that he's been a member of this church ( on the council ) presumably for many years, yet this was the 1st time he "received the spirit"

I know everyones beliefs are different, that just strikes me ass odd.

Talk about having your faith "shaken".........

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe in the Holy Spirit, but have always shaken my head at the carnival acts where they line people up and ALL of them fall down and convulse... Or how is it that Bob Larson always find several demons to cast out at every appearance he makes? I used to really enjoy his radio show back in the 80's and still remember the very first "possessed person" he dealt with over the phone. That event was like the first steel chair toss on Geraldo -- great ratings ideas, huh? What a fraud...

I think the power of suggestion in crowds can be amazingly strong. I'm immune to it.

Again, not intending to comment on that church or pastor specifically -- just what I've seen before in general.

I always wonder what special place in Hell the Almighty has set aside for the fakers who use the guise of Christianity to take advantage of people. The king IMO, of course, is Robert Tilton, aka the "Farting Preacher"...

I remember his show hit our television stations very soon after the Jim Baaker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals during the 80's, and I actually called the station to complain. They literally told me that their format required either 30 minutes or 1 hour of "religious programming" every day, and that was what they had available. I told them it was the worst thing they could put up, and to find something else. They didn't.

I HATE it when my catcher misses me. Jeez, just the other day, in my adult baseball league, I shook off the curveball twice, but the fucker wouldn't let me throw my changeup, and...

Wait. Never mind.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

On a very loosely related topic, the crowd mentality is sometimes just a short step away from the mob mentality... Any British Judge Dredd fans here? Maybe they can find the specific quote from the comics known as "Bob's Law", which says something like, "Gather enough people together, and it's only a matter of time before someone does something stupid."... LOL! I've had my own version for years, and that is "The collective I.Q. of any large crowd synchronizes with that of the lowest in the group."

Mob behavior especially is incomprehensible to me... amazing how people can just lose all sense of self and go with the flow, doing stupid stuff like overturning cars and burning things when their sports team loses a game. Or pulling people from vehicles and beating them within an inch of their life because they didn't like a courtroom verdict. They can't be that far removed from animals if they can go there so easily. To coin a Rush Limbaugh phrase, it's amazing how "rugged individualism" in our society has become rare among the average Joes as CIVILization slowly slips into the drink.

Several of Today's TV evangelists never paid any attention to Jesus saying it harder for a rich man to enter Heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle ( that's paraphrased )

Talk about lifestyles of the rich & Famous......and largely bankrolled by senior sending their social security money> I wont name names, but theres a few who If I meet them are going to get a knuckle sandwhich !!!!

on the other hand, maybe I'll just let God be the judge of them.......

( see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya !!)

Actually, it's not too paraphrased at all -- that's pretty much what it says. The meaning is, when you have so much money that you can do whatever you please, there isn't much reason to rely on God for anything. That's their challenge. The real myth that pop culture keeps churning out today, though, is that all that money brings you happiness, which it doesn't. Lots of extremely rich folks are also some of the most screwed up and emotionally underdeveloped people you will meet -- especially the ones who were born into money instead of making their wealth on their own.

I'm not against money or rich people at all, but the Prosperity Gospel has been nothing but poison to Christians.
