Now that it's had a chance to sink in...??

Postby Liam » Sun Jun 08, 2008 4:30 pm

...What are your thoughts on Revelation NOW? Mine are the fact that only 2 songs really grabbed me. And those are Never Walk Away and Where Did I Lose Your Love. Initial impressions are deceiving, which is why I'm posting this right now. I gave a full, track by track, review of this and now I'm backing down on it. I'll still say that WDILYL and NWA are the best songs on the album...but after hearing it more...just doesn't sit well with me as a whole. Feel free to disagree with me (that's what this forum is for: Debate) I just think that I've got to downgrade it from an 85% to about a 70%. Like I said...initial impressions are deceiving...so that's why I say all this. So flame me if you must. Don't really care.
Arrival this ain't. (IMO)

I think I've played Revelations more in the last few days than I've played Generations in 3 years.

Still think its a great record. Ask me in two weeks. :)

It's a great album. Hands down, their best since Frontiers.

Best since Generations, yes. Best since Frontiers...gotta give that honor to ROR or even Arrival. Again IMO.
Just want to see what other people's opinions are. :-)

I like the songs more. I was more critical at first, but now I am stuck on them...especially, "What I needed". But, it isn't all that I am listening to...I've been playing Infinity in the car and loving it just as much as ever.

ROR is good but not enough rockers.
Arrival, um, same thing. :)

Well...I'd take the ballads (even with how HEAVY that album WAS with ballads) over the ones on Revelation.

EDIT: ROR...I agree to an extent. That album was a "Sign of the times" so to speak.

I like it.
A LOT.
But I've been ripped each time I've listened to it all the way through.

...I'm sure I'll still love it later.

After listening to the album for a while, I can safely say this is their best post Perry album. At first, I thought it might even be the best since Frontiers, but then I went back and listened to ROR and TBF and remembered what was missing from the band.

It certainly is their most rocking record and has the most in your face energy, but the writing, melody choices and song craftsmanship isn't as strong as anything they've done with Perry in the mix. Arnel's vocal skill is the closest to Perry's as they've had, but the chemistry isn't the same. Neal and Perry were musical soul mates. Two halves of a whole. All the mimicry and revisitation in the world can't duplicate that. Shame they don't get along. Still, all in all, it's a great release and nitpicks aside, I'm still enjoying it overall (first time I can say that in the post Perry era).

For me the best songs are (in this order):

Change for the Better (Best song on the album for me and the most original)
Like a Sunshower
What I Needed
Where Did I Lose Your Love (Starting to lose interest in this one though. The chorus melody and backing vocals just bugs me.)

The rest I can take or leave.

Chill bro...your input is still welcome here and even a negative reaction to the album is fine by me. If it don't float your boat, then so be it.

I'm digging the hell out of it when I didn't really expect to and rate it up there with both Arrival and Raised On Radio - just different. 3 great DIFFERENT albums.

3 line-ups, 3 different GREAT albums and none of the above featuring the "classic" line-up. Strange band this.

BTW 'Drew...ever think of doing a "Classic Album Of The Week Review"? Tell all out there reading what you think on a track by track of, let's say, Grand Illusion, Departure, or Moving Pictures, etc.?
Just an idea...but it'd be cool to read your thoughts on said albums. :-)

I still love Revelations. Listened to it all day yesterday. Sunshower, Change for the better, wildest dream, turn down the world tonight, and fith remake are really great, over and over listening to them and this list doesnt even contain AATY and NWA which we all know are great. I will say this is the best CD since Frontiers, hands down.

Love disc1. In some ways it's the best Journey record since Frontiers.

Can't hardly listen to disc2. Making it through that 'fubar' again will take a lot of time.

Haven't touched the DVD yet, and probably won't until I see them in person a couple of times. The magic of going to your first live show of the season needs to be anticipated & savored. Watching the DVD will most likely jade me somewhat.

My exact thought. Not that I expected crap, but I feared some let's-just-throw-something-out-there mediocre release. And the early clips of NWA were fueling that. But once I turned it up the entire album on a decent system, I'm more than pleasantly surprised...quite blown away actually.

I think it's the best since Frontiers OVERALL. Only one or two songs I tend to skip over. Really not a bad song on it, however. I also personally am enjoying the re-makes. They are a little different, and I fully accept that. As much as I love Journey and their songs, I can only listen to the Greatest Hits so many times. This freshens the songs up a little for me.

For me it's definitely the best since Frontiers. I don't skip any songs and the only one I have an issue with is Wildest Dream which is just too repetitive at the end. Could have shortened it up a bit. I liked Arrival but the sound was too dry and lifeless compared to Revelation and there were too many songs to weed through. If you took the best 12 songs and shortened Arrival it would have been better. I have this OCD thing about hitting the skip button. I like to listen to a CD all the way through and enjoy it that way without skipping tracks.

You notice on the DVD Wildest Dream seems to be quite the rocker? They really let go with this, best pure rocker Ive heard from Journey in a while.

Its good overall, but it would have been better with Perry.
Sadly that didn't happen so I say ARNEL is pretty damn cool and he did a fine job!

What it takes to Win is my favorite on the cd and I can see the NFL or any sports program
using this song over and over.
