O M G Just watched DVD and Deen Castronovo BLEW ME AWAY

Postby BobbyinTN » Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:08 am

I've heard the YouTube clips of him singing "Mother, Father", but that performance was simply amazing. The notes he hit made my jaw drop.

The whole band was on FIRE for the filming and Arnel is perfect singing the Journey catalog.

I'm beyond impressed with the DVD and the new songs.

A definite double threat. Killer drummer...even better singer.

I used to have a metal radio show on my college radio station, and I interviewed the guitarist from "Wild Dogs" one time. We were talking about their drummer, this guy named Deen Castronovo that did these incredible 32nd and 64th notes on his ride cymbal on one track. I may still have the LP (yep, I said LP) buried in the closet at my mom's house. I'll have to dig that one out.

in the Vegas DVD, he was pretty animated. In this one, he seems more intense.

Another good drummer is Styx's Todd Sucherman. On their latest dvd, there's a section called 'quake cam' that just focuses on Todd. Holy crap.... it 's awesome to watch the guy.

He does a fantastic job on that song. That was my favorite moment on the DVD. I wasn't expecting that he would sing at all. I hope he continues to sing that on the tour.

Sorry...but I'm not 100% convinced Deen's lead on Mother/Father is 100% live. The notes are almost too perfect, especially the high notes. You don't even hear the breathing for christ sake which is just weird.

Breath sounds aren't exactly extremely audible at a concert, over the music going on at the same time? Seriously, unless the singer has stridor (in which case they wouldn't even be talking let alone singing) then what kind of breath sounds are you expecting to hear, esp. with the music & crowd noise? You can tell by watching Deen how hard he's working to sing & play drums at the same time, you can see him concetrate on his breathing on the closer shots, esp. when he's really belting it out.

Actually I don't think he is singing this song as well as he used to. When I saw them in 2005 ? ( I think ) his voice seemed much stronger.

There was likely some form of post production on the audio as would be expected - a gate on the vocals or whatever but Deen's vocal seemed 100% live to me and was bloody brilliant!

I'm not 100% convinced your head is screwed on straight.
Deen is DEFINITELY singing Live in that performance.
There may be some instances where it "looks off"
but I think the "sync" issues were never 100%
fixed by Shirley. There are some other performances,
NWA and WD come to mind, that kinda look like Arnel's
vocals have been replaced with studio work...

I doubt that's the case.
I think there are still some sync discrepancies on the
DVD that you can catch if you watch close enough.

At the end of the show, after they'd redone a few tracks for the DVD, someone (and I can't remember who) told me that he was certain Arnel was lipping on one of the do-overs... I mentioned that immediately to someone else, who said they didn't notice. Never heard anything about it later until you mention. And I was just watching the DVD yesterday, and also wondering about the vocals on Never Walk Away -- sounded pretty much like the studio vocals, and at a bare minimum, the backing vocals must have been canned... it had me wondering, so funny you should mention that...

Oh, yeah... Trollafana, we aren't sure exactly what you are, but there is something obviously wrong with you. Creepy, to be honest...

Deano doesn't care enough about the band to fire up the ol' blog anymore.

Anyone else willing to step up to the plate?

I would "Hope" there is no lipping or studio-trickery
going on in this DVD...
Hasn't anyone in this band learned their lesson yet?

Do I think Arnel's vocals on NWA are near "studio perfect"? Yes.
Do I think it was possible for him to do this, with a song
that is "his own" and not Perry's or Augeri's, so soon
after actually recording it??? Yes.

Who knows...
I still think the sync issues Shirley and the band alluded to
weren't 100% taken care of on the DVD...

Although, Fox Moulder would say that this "equipment sync"
story is the perfect cover up for some shennanigans

You guys do realize there's about 0 point in lipping on a recorded DVD performance, right? At least from a "oh man this is going to be released for the general public" standpoint, worst case scenario they go in and overdub in the studio. You honestly think they'd be stupid enough to lip on their first live document since Tapegate? Deen's performance looks AND sounds very live to me... it's great, but it's definitely not studio polished or anything.

Deen's ATF was just as good and I wish they added that to the DVD but MF is great.

I personally do not think there was any lip-syncing going on. I heard the draw of breath live. It's probably post concert production that eliminated hissing and all but I heard it when I was there.

Those high notes sounded like they weren't even human vocals. I think they were played by synth or triggered on a pad.

Yeah they were definitely triggered and the band wasn't making any show of them not being so during the performance... only vintage SP could hit those inhuman notes. I never even knew they weren't synth on the record til I saw the Escape 81 DVD
