I knew I shouldn’t have clicked on this thread... more Republican sophistry from the party of wide toilet stances and murdering brown people.

Al Gore made a vague mention of “weekend passes for convicted criminals," he didn’t run TV ads featuring a menacing mug shot ad nauseum, or change William’s name to “Willie,” (which smacks of the same racist childlike condescension of blacks being called “boy”).
Nor, last I checked, were Al Gore’s officials gleefully rubbing their hands together over how Horton would be used as “every suburban mother's greatest fear."

So does this mean that Al Gore is just a little bit racist??? Or does he get a complete pass from you because he had a D next to his name?

How was race exploited in Al Gore's statement?

Because Willie Horton was black. If you can make the claim that calling William "Willie" is racist. Then bringing up the issue at all which involves a black man at all is a smear against black men. One's no more ridiculous than the other.
Bottom line with me is liberals are soft on crime. Perfect example.

US have a much higher rate crime than a lot of more liberal country, like Sweden or even Canada.

The furlough program which Gore mentioned was not exclusively comprised of black men.
The fact that you would leap to such a conclusion tells me all I need to know about your racial views.

I think it's racist for TNC to assume that "Willie" is an unflattering name that invokes negative stereotypes of blacks. The notion is insulting to people of color, as well as Willie's the world over. How about your ex-president Slick Willie? Or Free Willie, who was both black and white? Gimme a break, dude... another example of TRUE racism coming from snooty liberals...

What he's referring to is, of course, the advertisement that featured a mug shot of Horton for a period of about 3-4 seconds, before the "revolving door" images.

So the RNC should have put up the mug shot of some arbitrary white guy?

Did those people have their names involuntarily changed by a political campaign?
And if not, what relevance exactly do they have to this discussion?

So if they had run the add showing his mugshot and using William it would have been okay?
What did you think of a democrat congressman referring to Obama as a "clean, articulate, black guy"?
Does that make all democrats and liberals racists? That is far worse than calling William Willie and showing the guys actual factual mugshot isn't it?

Amazing to watch the contortionist lengths you are willing to reach to defend Republican hatchetmen like Lee Atwater and Roger Ailes.
And here I thought you weren't affiliated with the Republican party.
The court records and news articles all listed his name as William.
If you can come up with a racially benign reason for changing an adult black male's name to the childlike and partonizing "Willie", I'm all ears.

Biden's comments about Barack Obama were racist and frankly, odd.

RedWingFan wrote:Does that make all democrats and liberals racists?

I never said the Willie Horton incident proved all Republicans are racist.
I did say the racist vote has been a part of the Conservative coalition since the 60s, and has even been courted by such party luminaries including Reagan.

An off-the-cuff comment given by one man on the campaign trail is in no way comparable to a co-ordinated smear campaign produced, written and overseen by committee.

A "smear"? Did the RNC lie regarding Horton? Did Dukakis not give him a weekend work release? How is that a smear?

And why is Biden's remark dismissed as an off the cuff remark and George Allen's Macaca remark bring outrage from you and they are unforgivable? You accuse Rip of being partisan and reaching in contortionist lengths when you do the same.

Again, you ducked my question, and I'm not suggesting to know the answer. Only that I don't personally know a single person named William who goes by William -- they were either Bill, Will, Willie, etc.... So I wonder what his friends and family called him?

It's expected that court records and often newspapers would use a person's formal name -- that proves nothing.

Biden was gushing about Obama being so clean and articulate, as if such black men are an anomaly.
If there is such a thing as racist flattery, that was definately it. While racist, I thought it more odd than anything.
Allen, on the other hand, pointed out a dark skinned campaign volunteer in a crowd and referred to him by an epithet.
The mean-spiritedness is what made the difference.
And the voters of Virginia clearly agreed.
