weird part about it was that the rest of the show was fine....and I don't think Stone in Love ever made a return appearance on the FTLOSM tour. His voice wasn't shot--he had just lost some range, and that song was at the upper end of what he had at the time. It's a higher song than it would appear on the surface--and it's consistently high, not just the occasional high note here and there like a lot of the others.

I know, I just posted pretty much the same thing you did, about the first song Only The Young performance from that show, in this thread. http://forums.melodicrock.com/phpBB/vie ... 1&start=90

I don't think he ever really got Only the Young to work on that tour. Seems like that was always a warm-up song for his voice, and the best results were later in the tour when he drastically changed the lead vocal melody.

That being said, I dare anyone to listen to this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osEEKWcFJ4g and tell me his voice was shot. That sounds better than some of the ROR recordings I have heard, and might be the single best performance of that song that I've ever heard.

Did he lose some range over the years? Yes, it appears so. Did he have some bad nights? Other than maybe John Farnham, EVERYBODY does. Was his voice flaky from show to show? Yes, it appears so, but the good outnumbers the bad. The guy could still sing, and on that song, was hitting notes higher than the other clip without any problems. He could still sing and sounded like Steve Perry--not Kermit the Frog, not the Exorcist demon, and not like a clubbed seal....well, not much ;)

If Journey could have gotten John Farnham back in 98 that would have been the bees knees. Queen rerecorded "We will rock you" with John on lead vocals and he outfreddied Freddie.

shame

More an age thing, most singers that hit the late 30 to 40 mark struggle..Robert Plant ,Ian Gillan,Roger Daltrey to name a few, sometimes key adjustment can sort it,though in this case i just think it was no longer within his vocal range, saying that he handles some of the other stuff reallty well, his voice was not shot just different

Yeah, its rough. I've always said that one seemed damn near impossible to match. That might even be part of why its my favorite song ever. Its perfect. Its so perfect its own original singer couldn't do it. ROFL! There aren't a lot of boots after '81 where this one sounds... er... well like it did in '81. (I'm being nice) I've never been a fan of the subsequent singers covering that one either. Especially the re-record. Omg its just awful. The only version that didn't make me want to kill someone was JSS singing it.

Good point, though "When You Love A Woman", strikes me as - by far - the least demanding as far as range goes. That was actually the song that showed me the "super super high days" were gone.

Some of you people that have your head's up either Arnel's ass, (or Augeri's) better get ready for the Youtube clips when Arnel's voice gets roadworn from Journey using him up. We've already seen what it did to Augeri in short order.

It's a miracle Perry had a voice left at all, after the degree of touring he did with Journey in their heyday. Let somebody else sing those songs as long as he did in that range and show me what is left of their voices.
Wait....there's always lippin'! That works fine for alot of you. I remember some of you actually PREFERRED it! Perry would rather give it all he has than do that. Makes for a less than perfect concert experience, though, if you would rather have a lipped performance, as so many bands are doing these days.

The majority of Perry's FTLOSM tour vocals were flat out kick ass. They were something none of us thought we'd ever see/hear again from him.

Remember the Augeri YouTube's with the giant microphone? Arnel is next, so get ready, all you geeks that think he can out-Perry Perry.

We were damn lucky Perry even did the FTLOSM shows and a hell of alot of people enjoyed them, dumbasses.

I agree...I have boots from several shows on that tour and most of them are pretty good, much more consistent than, say, the ROR tour.

What moron has said anything like that?

We were damn lucky Perry even did the FTLOSM shows and a hell of alot of people enjoyed them, dumbasses.

You're the dumbass if you think anyone here is saying that Perry isn't one of the greatest ever. It was simply meant to show that Perry wasn't ALWAYS on top of his game. That's all. If you took more out of it than that, then you're simply getting out of it what you WANT to get out of it.

Why are you guys using a stupid White Sox video to decide if Perry still has it or not? Wouldn't it be more realistic to hear new music or see him in concert? Oh yeah, we haven't heard either. So, I think until we do, it's kind of a moot point.

I'm not sure what it would sound like as Farnham is usually just a bit lower, but wow...what a singer. There IS a video out there on youtube with him doing a duet on Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is and he is dead on though. Like I said, maybe the only singer on the planet to never have a bad night and one of the best live singers ever.
