OT: Tom Petty Tour 2008

Postby RumTumJM » Sat Jun 14, 2008 3:35 pm

Hey has anyone seen Tom Petty (or plans on seeing him) this tour? How does he sound? Everything sounds good, but in some cases, too good. For instance, Refugee is now being performed in it's original key, when I believe that it was taken down in key for past tours in recent years. Could Tom just really be singing that well again, or did he all of a sudden choose to go to the dreaded tape. Ironically, I think he used pre-recorded help for Free Fallin' in the past, but that does not seem to be the case anymore. Considering he takes some hits like American Girl down in key, many people seem to think, "Why would he" What do you guys think.

This link to to a site that is streaming all of the songs from Petty's June 6th Philadelphia show. Song 18 is a good, complete version of Refugee to see what I am talking about.

I figured, if there is any place where people know about lip-syncing (unfortunately), it would be this place!

A video from 2003 in which he sings it in a lower key, and still has help from band member Scott Thurston.

Petty's another favorite of mine. Yep, I'll catch him if he's touring.

Here's a great quote from him in Esquire mag interview:

I could never have built a career like I've had if I were just starting out now. Radio doesn't take a chance on anything anymore; they've streamlined the playlists to the lowest common denominator. It's really kind of silly that they think people would rather hear "Stairway to Heaven" one more time than a new song.

My opinion of Tom Petty live can be best be summed up as: Zzzzzzz

I love him in the studio but live they are so boring. The sound is not big, they don't take hardly any chances with arrangements, and they don't move at all. Boring and not worth the price.

He's even keel, but I definitely like some of his songs and respect him. He's got that laid back rock/folk thing going on, but he does it well with a unique voice. I think his new material might have 'jumped the shark', after splitting with his original drummer, Stan Lynch who I believe co-wrote alot of the original hits. I don't own any his albums, but he's one of those artists almost everyone likes, that I'm ok with.

I've seen him several times in the past couple years and I'm going to see him again in July. I think he puts on a great show and I can't wait to see him with Steve Winwood!
