I have 8 Mellencamp CDs, and not a single note by Seger or Springsteen. Those two have always bored me.

Not to mention listening to them is like having someone take a fork down a chalkboard. I wanna puke every time a Seger song comes on the radio or I have to sit through Old Time Rock and Roll in a bar or at a wedding. Like an ice pick in the ear.

Oh come on now! You're exagerating! It's rock and roll, for God's sake! Does EVERYONE have to sing like a Castrati??

Seger, by far is the best. The concert I went to over a year ago was great. Mellencamp was better when he was Cougar. Springsteen - I don't get the love affair. O.k. at best.

Totally agree. Only exception is I did like "Wild Nights" when it came out.

I may have voted for John Cougar...but not Mellencamp. His first album as "Cougar" was very simple, but great. Being from the Midwest...I loved "Great Midwest".

Seger...legend. I agree about the worn out, cliched, wedding dance hit of Old Time Rock & Roll though. Uff Dah!

Nope, completely serious. "Turn The Page", "Against The Wind", "Roll Me Away" "Fire Down Below"- chalkboard fingernails...all of them

Ugh, God, I"m getting sick just listing them....

The ONLY song I ever liked by him was "Shame on The Moon"

Cougar is okay, Springsteen sounds like a dying water buffalo ( to me). I have to go with Seger here.
I like most of his material.

I picked Seger. LOVE him!! I never really 'got' Mellancamp although he has a couple songs I like.

Mellencamp has passed Springsteen? What the hell?

Most of Springsteen's songs aren't political. To dismiss him over some is to miss out on a ton of great music. Legendary songwriter and one of if not the best performers ever. Check these out.

Those are in the "ick" category as well. "Shame on the Moon" is the only one I really like and "Til It Shines". Like I said, I can tolerate "Mainstreet" and even "Her Strut". The rest....the channel is turned IMMEDIATELY!

Let me put it this way, I'd go see Kansas again before I'd go see Seger in concert.

I liked cougars scarecrow album, after that, not so much. Hate Springteen (prefer Springfield!) and hate HATE Seger. Blech.... What the hell is he doing in the R&R Hall of Fame while Journey sits outside???

I thought they were one and the same!

I will never get "the Boss". Decent (not brilliant) songwriter, but like Dylan, I can't stand his performances of his own songs. Seriously crappy singer. Seger is just lame period. Can't stand him. Cougar had some promise until he started putting fiddle in his songs and tried to add rap beats to his stuff. Now I just don't dig him at all.

Well, we're all entitled to our own opinion. I think (as do millions of his fans!) that he's the finest songwriter of his generation (of course, I KNOW his lyrics don't to compare to the brilliance of , oh say, a schlock-fest like AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, but, hey- he's trying!) and his voice is...well, it's rock and roll! It ain't pretty and it ain't supposed to be.

People slagging on Springsteen's voice (which , I'm sorry- is LIGHT YEARS better than Dylan's) is kinda like folks slagging on John Lennon's voice. Lennon's wasn't "pretty" like McCartney's, but it WAS Rock and Roll- if you don't like that, I dare say you don't like the genre! Perhaps lounge is more for you, or maybe smooth Jazz instead???

Great tracks StoneCold...off a very under-rated album. Not a huge fan of Springsteen's work overall but I saw him take the roof off a stadium show in London a couple of weeks back. It's funny...he hasn't got much range in his voice and he dances like a spassy old man..and his stage patter is dull as ditch water...but you've got to hand it to the guy....he's still a natural born superstar.

Not saying I liked Dylan's voice. Hated it actually. Just like Bruce. Lennon and McCartney were both great singers and songwriters. With Bruce, I think he's WAY overrated and I don't get what the fuss about him is. He was never innovative, he was never interesting, he was just .... there. I can't think of one song of his that touches me in any way. Born in the USA is one of the worst tunes ever recorded IMHO. Awful.

Oh man, if I EVER get another request for "Old Time Rock and Roll" it'll be too soon. Kill me!
Give me a good tenor voice, harmonies, and interesting, well played songs. Bob Seger to me was just a bar band. Nothing that interesting. I don't know, I liked Katmandu and I think Night Moves because it was one of the first songs I figured out how to play as an 11 year old, but I just never 'got' him. I feel the same about Steve Miller. Just boring stuff. Coolest thing he did was Jungle Love because it was such an interesting guitar part. The rest of his stuff is dull.

I agree that he's over-rated and Born In The USA is horrible - as are most of his rabble-rousing numbers. But the low-key, depressive side of his music - Nebraska, Tunnel of Love, Philadelphia, etc - is pretty strong I reckon and I definitely 'get' Springsteen when he's in that mode.

I LOVE all three.

My personal songwriting style is highly influenced by the heartland rock fellas. These days I like Springsteen the most but there have been stages where all three have been my favorites.

I think all three are highly deserving of their places in rock's top praises and are all great performers, writers, and singers. Not everyone has to have a high tenor to be a great singer.. I "feel" Bruce, Bob, and John more than many other artists.. I just "get" these guys in a special way, I guess.
