I thought they were one and the same!
I will never get "the Boss". Decent (not brilliant) songwriter, but like Dylan, I can't stand his performances of his own songs. Seriously crappy singer. Seger is just lame period. Can't stand him. Cougar had some promise until he started putting fiddle in his songs and tried to add rap beats to his stuff. Now I just don't dig him at all.
Well, we're all entitled to our own opinion. I think (as do millions of his fans!) that he's the finest songwriter of his generation (of course, I KNOW his lyrics don't to compare to the brilliance of , oh say, a schlock-fest like AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, but, hey- he's trying!) and his voice is...well, it's rock and roll! It ain't pretty and it ain't supposed to be.
People slagging on Springsteen's voice (which , I'm sorry- is LIGHT YEARS better than Dylan's) is kinda like folks slagging on John Lennon's voice. Lennon's wasn't "pretty" like McCartney's, but it WAS Rock and Roll- if you don't like that, I dare say you don't like the genre! Perhaps lounge is more for you, or maybe smooth Jazz instead???

Not saying I liked Dylan's voice. Hated it actually. Just like Bruce. Lennon and McCartney were both great singers and songwriters. With Bruce, I think he's WAY overrated and I don't get what the fuss about him is. He was never innovative, he was never interesting, he was just .... there. I can't think of one song of his that touches me in any way. Born in the USA is one of the worst tunes ever recorded IMHO. Awful.
a) Ok, I'll once again state that he's an acquired taste for some (though once again, I know of NO ONE who's seen his live show and not come away with a smile on their face) and quite frankly, I'm not a big fan of most of his mid-80's output (BORN IN THE USA, while far from the worst tune ever recorded, is a bit overrated) but not innovative? My God, have you ever LISTENED to the BORN TO RUN album? Incredible, layer upon layer of sound- strings, horns, blazing guitars, and some of the finest lyrics ever penned. I challenge you to listen to MEETING ACROSS THE RIVER or JUNGLELAND and tell me that music wasn't VASTLY ahead of it's time. And DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN? A modern classic! It paved the way for the Mellancamps, and just about every other "heartland" artist out there. NEBRASKA?? For fucks sake, that album influenced JOHNNY CASH!!!! And shit, tell me Jon Bon Jovi hasn't been trying his level best to become Springsteen for the last 15 years!
Sorry, don't mean to get so uppity. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder- but even if you don't like him, give the man credit where credit is due...
b) Hell..I forgot what B was...that's what happens when I go on a tear!
