"Deep Tracks" Cure and Incentive to buy Next Album

Postby Carlitto H@kk » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:37 am

I know there was a thread awhile back asking how we thought the band
should promote their next album w/Arnel. I thought it was pretty absurd
thinking about that already; who knows if we'll even get another Journey
album, right?

But then I found myself thinking today, after reading countless comments, including my own,
on how it would be nice if the band dug into it's "deep tracks" catalog more often and
thought of a GREAT way to package the next album if they do record one.

Once the band is back in writing/recording mode,
set up a Fan Wishlist on the official site and ask
the fans to list the Top 3 "Deep Tracks" or "Rare Songs" they
would most like to hear Live again. Compile a list
of the Top 10-12 songs and then book an intimate show
in the Bay area, perform those top voted songs in a "Storytellers"-type
setting and add that performance as a Bonus DVD to the next album.

We diehards would get to hear those songs Live again, newer fans may
"discover" them for the first time and that may lead to the band feeling
comfortable playing them more in the future...

Any thoughts???

My first choice "Little Girl"
Second "Look Into the Future"
Third "Winds of March"

And consider this:
The band is writing/rehearsing new material.
They compile this list from fan voting and then
take a month off from the new stuff to
learn/re-learn all this obscure material...

Diving into this obscure catalog would take the
band back to their roots and may inspire Neal
to write new material in ways he hasn't in years.
It may inspire Cain to write in ways he never has.
It could really inspire some incredible new material.

Besides, this band has been living off the DD and that "Legacy" sound for years;
why not dip into the "other half" of that Legacy sound and take advantage
of this outstanding, untapped resource

Excellent idea, Carlitto. They should record that kind of performance for DVD as well.

That's what I meant - Album of all new material packaged
with Bonus DVD of said performance

Instant "must have" for the diehards and a
major incentive to buy another Journey album.

Carlitto, you've read my mind fella. I've wanted the band to do something similar to this for awhile now.

Right up my freakin' alley. I'm behind this 700%.

excellent ideal,
maybe they could do a 30 city tour of theatres
and only play 3 DD songs in the encore
if not maybe neal can finally do a solo tour
or atleast a few solo shows

The best promotion for Journey's second album (with Arnel) is a successful tour and sales of their first album.

After this tour and CD, you'll hear mainstream media stuff like: " .... following their sell-out tour and multi-platinum Revelation CD, the rock band Journey ..... ". See what I'm saying? Success breeds success. It would become easier for the band to negotiate other CD deals; to negotiate concert promotion (and venue selection); to negotiate track promotion in movies, TV shows, cell-phone ring-tones, etc.; and complete other business ventures -- ALL of which are necessary to keep the CD sales rolling in, and get future concert tickets sold. PLUS ... the mainstream media might be able to say that one track ("After All These Years") is Grammy-nominated (or has charted high, etc.).

My point is that Journey should have lots of favorable goodwill coming off this tour and CD promotion, which they absolutely didn't have after Arrival. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Rather than going into the deep catalogue (some of which I really like, such as "Of A Lifetime"), I'd like to see Journey (1) have some fantastic song-writing for the second CD, and (2) play some more of their post-Perry material in concert. As I've said in other posts, they will have quite a variety of songs from Arrival, Generations, and Revelation to choose from. They shouldn't be afraid to make some of them regular songs in the line-up (e.g., "Higher Place", "The Place in Your Heart, "Faith in the Heartland", and -- again -- "After All These Years").
