How is Arnel holding up so far on tour ?

Postby Liquid_Drummer » Fri Jun 20, 2008 6:33 am

Not much clear audio out there from the current UK tour. Just wondering how his voice is holding up and how they are sounding..

I'm sure he will continue to grow into an even better vocalist as this tour goes on. A Night to Night basis if you will. It's not this year that worries me...hell or even next year, or the year after that given what the band wants to do tour wise in the near future. It's 4 or even 5 years down the road if they are still going strong is where I want to see if his voice is still with-holding the grueling challenges of this catalog. Time will tell.

:?: I wonder if Arnel has a vocal coach or advisor with him on this tour?

If they're smart at all they have had a vocal coach working with AP from the very start... if AP doesn't work out, it's gonna have to be SP or bust and I think we know how likely SP rejoining is...

I really like AP. I hope they're doing it right this time.

I think it's a little early to worry about his voice. Maybe there will be a difference at the end of the tour or in a year or two. While he wasn't perfect all the time, it still took Augeri a few years before the Journey catalog began to take its toll on him, and he was generally singing out of his comfortable vocal range.

I hope his voice lasts until the band retires, but if it doesn't, he'll have some great stories to tell his kids and grandkids.

uh...he'll be like 45-46 years old then. Enjoy what we have now, 5-6 years I can't see "Journey" being relevant as far as new or current. Touring a few places? Sure, but not on the level we're seeing right now.

Depends on the quality of material on the next album, and the quality of the promotion they put behind it. JM2.

Arnel's a professional and a damned disciplined one from what I've heard. If anything does happen to his voice it won't be because he didn't do everything in his power to do this thing right. He's on a special diet, has become lean and fit, adheres to a strict vocal regimen and doesn't ever drink. He makes those around him better people. Friga was right. Leadership by example.

See, that right there ain't ever gonna work. He'll be dead from dehydration before he gets back to the USA. ;)

If he doesn't stop that bounding off of the drum riser, he's going to screw up a hip.

He's a hell of a performer. Love the energy.

The accent's becoming less and less noticeable. He'll be Americanized before the year's out. He sounds damn good here.

He needs to stress the "z" sound in "years" rather than these "ss" sort of sound.

NWA sounds much better than the CD. He makes extra effort at the endings that sorely lacks in the recorded version.

While at the 2.06 - 2.08 part in AATY he's really putting more feel to it, more inflections, like he MEANS it, at the "Alwaaays" part. I am VERY sure if they recorded the new tunes when Arnel has more time (like he is now) singing the tunes, Revelation would truly blow us away.

Saw Journey last night in Manchester.

Arnel was a demon, amazing vocals.

The whole band was very tight, and all looked great on stage.

According to Arnel's Filipino manager, Arnel was actually sick most of the time the CD (Revelation) was being recorded.

Here's an excerpt from the interview...he also mentioned that he first saw AP jumping around/with his signature moves on stage during one of his Hong Kong gigs....

APIFS: How is his work ethic?
BDL: Arnel is one of the most hard working musicians I've ever encountered and worked with. When he was called on the report for work on the new CD, he had to learn most of the songs overnight and he would stay holed up in his hotel room the whole night just listening and learning those new songs. In fact, he was sick for most of the time that the new CD was being recorded but he never whined nor complained…he just reported every day to the recording studio and did what he had to do. He almost didn't make it home in time for Christmas last year because he wanted to finish all the recordings in spite of a bad cold and fever. And during rehearsals for shows, he would always give his 100% and sing at performance level. I believe that is also the true mark of a professional, always willing and ready to deliver the goods when he is called upon…and Arnel is solid and reliable all the time.

His manager has steadfastly refused to confirm the terms of Arnel's contract.
It could be 1 year only, with a mere option to extend to a maximum of 3, for all we know.

I was at both London and Manchester and he's certainly holding up great so far. The band is giving him a lot of breaks during the set (Deen - 2 songs in Manchester, JC solo, NS solo, JC & NS jam).

I was right up front for both shows and he did talk more. If there was an accent I certainly didn't notice it and who cares? It was great music. His interaction with the audience was fantastic, he not only worked the crowd up front but really engaged the balcony as well.

It just keeps getting better and better. He actually had a box of tissues on stage and grabbed some whenever he left the stage, so I was wondering if he might have a cold. He had on about 3 layers of clothing and the venue was anything but cold and he was certainly working up a sweat. If he did have a cold or something, it certainly didn't affect his vocals.
