Not sure you would characterize the likes of Aerosmith and Deep Purple heavy metal bands. Hard rock maybe

I'd say the same for Led Zep but then I'm no expert

The guys in Zep (experts :) ) have come out and said that perhaps only 10% of their catalogue could be considered Heavy Metal.
So I would say that you are correct :)

That makes sense. I think that is a fair characterization of their sound, a little harder then prog rock, which I consider the Moody Blues to be pioneers of.

If you haven't seen it yet try to get Moody Blues Live from the Royal Albert Hall. Just a great musical production with the orchestra and everything. Definitely one of my favorite DVDs.

Exactly - same with Hendrix, kiss, thin lizzy, - what a stupid list - totally random meaningless crap.

They're still sounding great today too - the DVD you mentioned is great. They have several good ones. I saw them last July and it was honestly one of the best shows last summer. They sound great vocally and of course musically.

Maybe I would add DeathAngel and UFO to that list but I wouldn't know who to replace. I guess it would have to be the top 27 Heavy Metal bands
