Good stuff. Number 1 was a no brainer...for any decade. 8) :)

The fact that this list has Bryan Adams/Vallance and a bunch of indie/alt groups, only serves to legitimize Journey in the minds of any snarky Rolling Stone-reading sheep that view it.

That's awesome. I sent this to my "underground" friends.

I'm sure I'll get blasted, but Lee, Lifeson and Peart would not be out of place on that list...

Agreed. It's nice to see Blue Rodeo and Squeeze get the accolades they deserve.

It's fantastic to see P/S/C and Adams/Vallance get credit for writing some incredible stuff. Just because it's considered pop/rock doesn't make their songs any less valid. It's a shame that these teams probably won't write anything together again. If they truly understood the impact their music has on the lives of so many people, they'd still be writing together.

It's too bad that they could create even more music that could live on forever yet let petty disagreements stand in the way.

I would pick Graham Goble by himself over half the teams on that list.

Yeah, agreed 100%. WTF, the Smiths? They sold about 5 million records to fruity European guys.

Bono and Edge have written some decent stuff together. I know Edge handles the music but Bono has contributed to the lyrics of some of their biggest hits.

Yeah, Bono and the Edge are amazing. The Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire alone make them top-10 worthy.

Songwriting teams - Squeeze

Postby Diffworlds » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:46 pm

I also think there was a typo on the Squeeze section. Difford did the lyrucs, Tilbrook the music if I remember correctly.
Great team though. Some real treasures in their catalogue.

I'm not a huge Elton John fan but how could the team of Elton John/Bernie Taupin not be mentioned in that list?

Absolutely.

A few could easily disappear from that list. Add Rick Springfield on his own too (14 Top 40 hits in 8 years) and Adams/Vallance - those guys RULE!
So many hits and so many songs outside the known ones Bryan recorded. TV shows, movies, other artists....amazing songwriters with real chemistry.

Most definately -

The groups on that list were mostly writing for themselves - their own group and for a specific album.

Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil are not performers (ok Barry did release a couple of singles - then realized his talent was in the writing) - they are songwriters.

They have written so many hits - in the 60s and 70s every song list contained at least one item written by them.

Here is the story about them working with Phil Spector and how it led to "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"

It was the sixties and Phil Spector asked us to come out to LA to work with him. We flew out with our dog, Jody and stayed at the Chateau Marmont because it was the only place that would accept a German Shepherd as a guest. On top of that they let us bring in a rented piano.

Phil played us a record of two Orange County white boys who had a Sam and Dave sound and had had two local hits with up-tempo songs. We loved what we heard and inspired by the passion and yearning in our favorite song of the day "Baby I Need Your Loving", we went back to the hotel and wrote two verses and choruses of "YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELING". We weren't sure how to end the chorus and thought the title wasn't strong enough. We called and played what we had over the phone for Phil. He told us that when we hit the line "something beautiful's dying" it brought tears to his eyes. We told him we'd come up with a better title but he said "No! That's it". We then met with him to work on the end of the chorus, write the bridge and complete the song and he went on to produce one of the most soulful, innovative and creative records ever made.

For the same reason you shouldn't put Richrath and Cronin on the list....cause all their good stuff was written in the 70's.
And actually, Bernie didn't write alot with Elton in the 80's. They sort of had a break from one another if I remember. All the same, Sir Elton's 80's output was for the most part...how you say...shite??

Very true, though Bono's ego makes Herbie Herbert seem modest at times. ;-)

Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are right up there, '80s wise.

perry/Schon/Cain at #1 is accurate (and a ballsy pick by a writer).

Not a writing team per se, however a very unique combination.

Fuck yea. Plus...look at most of the lyrics and the structure of the songs. They're PHENOMINAL. I'm thinking of a toss-up between Rush and Journey for the number 1 spot.
