They did get the story right. Every singer replaces Steve Perry since they're singing his songs. When they auditioned Arnel I don't think he fucking sang Remember Me, Signs Of Life, and/or 400 Years Ago. You took this article way too literally. The article is spot on correct. I sense you know this but may have been jilted because you didn't get to see Soto's name in the article. That's what I sense this is about.

In a recent interview Friga was asked about tapegate. he denied it and said it was made up by a bunch of alcoholics on a message board{us}Those of us that were hear at the time saw the proof. Not telling the truth and lying are the same thing. Go on Youtube, type in Journey manchester 2006 and listen for when the tape cuts out through Faithfully and Steve A s real voice kicks in. And do it sober so Friga dosent call you a drunk

I thought Cain was spot on with his comments. Tried looking up Manchester but it's taking too long too load for some reason.

I remember that....Deen picks up the slack and finishes the song for him. Hysterical.

Apparently while the forum slept, Melodic.net ran this story and saw it fit to throw in their own two cents -

"The truth is hard to handle Cain, melodic.net has heard the live tapes from Sweden Rock Festival 2006 so we know Augeri was lip-synching."

http://www.melodic.net/newsOne.asp?newsId=10558

On a diametrically opposite note, here's is some rare footage of Augeri in his prime - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxiSXWjACxo

Enjoyed those highlights, thankyou!
I was so excited to finally see them at Manchester in 2006 - we had waited SO long for them to come over and play live for us.
And the disappointment felt when I knew he'd been lip synching still weighs a bit heavy.
I know he mimed to his own voice, but still........it burst my bubble.

Hope his voice is back to full health now.

No offense to anybody, but those people don't know Augeri or JSS, and probably can't name the members of the band--they just remember the songs.

From a marketing standpoint, it is a LOT easier to reintroduce a band this way then saying "this is our latest lead singer who replaced the guy who survived a tour before we let him go who replaced the guy who blew out his voice trying to replace Steve Perry and recorded several albums that sold nothing". They are not lying, they just aren't telling the entire truth. Not totally accurate, but it's the way public relations goes. Not really surprised either--from a MARKETING standpoint, I would do the same thing if I was in charge of p.r. for the band.

You are spot on with all your points, here! I think what sooooo many Journey fans forget is that the vast majority of so-called "fans", of ANY band, probably don't know the name of a single guy in most bands! I can tell you from a personal standpoint, there is a ton of music that I listen to and enjoy, by bands, who I don't know the name of many of the members (and really don't care). It's just the nature of the beast. Journey is doing press for the same reason EVERY band does it...for the positive publicity. What the hell would be the point of giving everyone a Journey Chronology in a 3 minute interview, when nobody really gives a shit???

Gotta agree with you, John. I am a huge Matchbox Twenty fan and I cannot tell you the name of a single band member other than Rob Thomas. Somebody left this year, and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the guitarist (it wasn't).

And yet I buy all their CDs (missed the recent concert - damn). So I bet a lot of folks know "Steve Perry" and some folks know "Neal Schon" and no one else. They are still buying the CDs and going to the concerts.

Back in the old days, you read album covers until you know who did what and who produced what and who wrote what - at least I did. Now, I don't even bother to read what is is the jewel case. A shame really....

Cain is very often shot through a Gay Angle lens.

Neal, Deen, Ross and Arnel usually stand perpendicular to it, so the effect is not seen on them. :D

Right, and Matchbox Twenty has ALWAYS marketed themselves as "Matchbox Twenty with Rob Thomas". I remember when they first broke onto the scene, I would hear their songs on the radio, the DJ would always say "Matchbox Twenty with Rob Thomas". It was almost bizarre, as I had never come across any band that had their lead singer's name so prominently featured right on the front of their CD's. I have zero doubt in my mind that Thomas did that, knowing all along that he wanted to put out some solo stuff and get that name recognition, which in my opinion was brilliant marketing, on his part!

As for the Journey thing...same situation, on a larger scale. In spite of what some jackass Perry haters on this board would have you believe, the guy had a VERY successful solo album. I personally consider FOUR top 40 hits (and we're talking about the Billboard 100 pop charts...not the "adult contemporary" charts that all of us old fucks are responsible for pumping up, these days) In spite of Neal Schon's brilliant musicianship, I would venture to guess that only the hardcore Journey fans (i.e. people who visit sites like this) have ever even heard of the guy. Unless someone has a strong interest in guitar, they probably pay very little attention to Mr. Schon. Bands create music together. The vocalist is responsible for making that music something beyond words on a piece of paper!
